This document tries to answer questions asked frequently on the mailing list or other questions that people might have when starting out with or evaluating Bricolage. Currently only PostgreSQL support is maintained. There is an Oracle driver, but it's old and not known to work. A port to MySQL 4.1 is reportedly underway.

far as we know, no one has performed any benchmarks comparing Bricolage to other content management systems. But the performance of Bricolage is irrelevant to a public facing site. As a back office content management and publishing system, Bricolage does not host web sites or serve content. Rather, when documents are published in Bricolage, they are pushed through templates and the resulting files are distributed to your Web server.

The amount of memory rdiff-backup uses should not depend much on the size of directories being processed. Keeping track of hard links may use up memory, so if you have, say, hundreds of thousands of files hard linked together, rdiff-backup may need tens of MB. If rdiff-backup seems to be leaking memory, it is probably because it is using an early version of librsync. librsync 0.9.5 leaks lots of memory. Later versions should not leak and are available from the librsync homepage.

The name Bricolage was not drawn directly from the common usage of the term in French, but rather from the first chapter of The Savage Mind, by the famed French anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss. In that famous discussion of scientific thought vs. mythical thought—of science vs. the science of the concrete—Lévi-Strauss declares, Mythical thought is therefore a kind of intellectual bricolage.

Windows will, by design, always attempt to find some use, anything whatever that might potentially be of some benefit, for every bit of RAM installed in the computer. So it will increase the size of the disk cache to take advantage of available RAM, and will retain the program code from closed applications in RAM in anticipation that the application might be launched again, as is very often the case.

The simple answer is, it doesn't! There are some GTK+ pixmap based themes around that leak a lot of memory. Please try using a different theme and see if that resolves the problem. X-Chat itself only allocates about 40kb of memory through malloc()!

On Windows, if one spawns a thread with, for example _beginthreadex, and makes CORBA calls from that thread, TAO will leak memory. TAO uses TSS (thread specific storage) for handling requests along the output data paths. With Win32 threads, the underlying type system does not invoke destructors on TSS and the application will leak memory. To get around this problem, please use ACE threads wherever possible. Why does mod_perl have to be statically compiled into Apache? I've been using mod_perl as a DSO and have had no problems with it at all.

There is currently only a tentative start for a bricolage debian package. The location of the package is http://people.debian.org/~erich/bricolage. To use this package, add the following line to your /etc/apt/sources.list file: deb http://people.debian.org/~erich/bricolage / of this writing, the package downloads and installs all necessary packages, but you still need to read through the instructions in /usr/share/doc/bricolage/README.Debian to setup a usable Bricolage installation.

There is currently an effort to make a KNOPPIX-style CD for Bricolage. Informally this CD is known as KNOPPIX with Bricolage. It is a CD that contains a Linux Distribution (Debian in this case) with Bricolage preinstalled. The system is self-contained on a CD and the user merely needs to boot an i386-compatible computer from the CD. The CD will not in any way alter the content of your hard disk. This CD is useful for evaluating Bricolage since it removes the hassle of installation.

Well a cynic might answer that there are two kinds of roofs, those that leak and those that will leak. Roofs leak from a break in the waterproofing layer, sometimes caused by mechanical damage (ie, someone dropping an HVAC access panel on the roof), sometimes from an opening in the sealant, such as pitch pans and caulking, and sometimes from deterioration or defects in the roofing material. Videodelic doesn't need a lot of memory. The minimum memory partition is 24 megabytes which will be adequate for most projects. If your project uses a lot of pictures or uses QuickTime movies, you will want to increase the partition size.

If inserted properly, The Keeper “should” not leak. However, some women find that it does-especially on those first 2 days.
