You can use fiberglass instead of the provided polyester skin, but we don't recommend it. While fiberglass requires less maintenance, it is actually more fragile than the skin that comes with the kit. The polyester skin will flex when it comes in contact with another object, whereas the fiberglass may crack and require extensive repair at home. If the polyester skin does get a hole in it, it is easy to do a field fix and continue on your way.

No, epoxy resin is only needed when the foam inside the surfboard is exposed. In other words, when you can see and touch the foam. If you have a small ding in an area like the nose or tail where the XTR foam is exposed, you don't have to repair it. It will not change color or gain any weight due to the closed cell foam. The water will not penetrate the surfboard. You will only need to fix this small ding for cosmetics and for safety.

Cured epoxy systems are very chemical resistant, and need to be removed with an epoxy-type paint stripper containing methylene chloride, or by a combination of heat for softening followed by scraping. Uncured epoxy resins and hardeners can be cleaned up with ketones, alcohols, or lacquer thinner. White vinegar will clean up unmixed resin components.

In general, polyester resins won't cure properly or bond well to epoxy resin products without a "tie-coat" barrier resin in between. System Three SB-112 resin system can be used as a tie coat in between epoxy laminating or coating resins, and polyester laminating or gelcoat resins. Using this resin allows you to gelcoat an epoxy-built or epoxy-repaired boat.

No. Any wood that's been coated with epoxy will be sealed, and when it's cured it won't accept stain. Stain wood first; then apply epoxy resin.

Answer: NO! The resin used in swimming pools must be protected by gelcoat or the resin will wear away within 4-7 years causing chaulking and cobalting. This must be avoided at all costs. Gelcoat cannot be applied to polyester resin because it will delaminate in less than a year. Only the highest quality resin will accept gelcoat and last for 20 to 30 years.

All solvent-free epoxies have essentially unlimited shelf lives so long as they are stored in sealed containers. Any one version of such a "hybrid" polymer often represents an optimization of certain performance characteristics at the expense of others. The value of any given KiON polymer hybrid is thus extremely application dependent and relies heavily on the complimentary organic starting materials which are employed.

We use System Three Epoxy. It tolerates varied conditions better than other brands we have tested. System III is less sensitive to moisture and humidity and cures in a wider temperature range than its competitors. If you prefer using another brand, we will sell you the kit without epoxy. No problem.

Generally the rule has been that the longer the drying time, the stronger the epoxy. I personally use 15-20 minute epoxies. I haven’t had the scales come off a knife in 15 years. Laminating resin is greenish blue in color and is the basic first coat of resin; it is used to adhere the cloth to the blank (this resin will only dry tacky and not sandable!) Sanding or hot coat resin or filler coat is almost the same thing; it is lam resin with surfacing agent (styrene monomer and paraffin wax) mixed in. Paint it on the laminated surfboard to fill the fiberglass weave and make the board sandable. Gloss/finish Resin is pink in color and is the final coat of resin.

Rayon and Polyester are the two most popular types of threads, but there are others including metallic and cotton. In general, Rayon has more sheen (shine) and is available in more colors than polyester. However, polyester thread is stronger and more color-fast, meaning it resists bleach and stands up well to industrial laundering. With the newer style universal needle plates people tend not to remove the needle plates when performing maintenance on their machines.
