Can I hot-swap a disk drive that is attached to any Sonnet Tempo Serial ATA card?
Sonnet - SupportYes, but it depends on the operating system (Mac OS or Windows) used. Sonnet Tempo Serial ATA PCI, PCI-X, and PCIe (PCI Express) cards only support drive hot swapping when used in Mac computers running Mac OS. SATA drive hot swapping is not supported in a desktop or server PC running Windows XP, Server 2003 or Vista. A SATA drive appears to the system as a not-removable hard drive and there is no mechanism in Windows to prepare the drive for removal.
Related QuestionsCan the Tempo SATA cards co-exist with other manufacturers' Serial ATA cards?
Sonnet - SupportYes, however, some other manufacturers' drivers may incorrectly assume a PCI-X Sonnet card is another SATA card; kernel panics may occur; the PCIe cards are not suspect to this problem.
Related QuestionsHow is Serial Attached SCSI complementary to Serial ATA?
SCSI Trade Association (SCSITA)SAS complements SATA by adding dual porting, full duplex and device addressing, plus it offers higher reliability, performance and data availability services, as well as logical SCSI compatibility. STA will continue to enhance these metrics as the specification evolves, including increased device support and longer cabling distances.

The group known as the Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO) owns the development of the Serial ATA technology and maintenance of its specifications. Scalability - Serial ATA is a point-to-point connection and allows multiple ports to be aggregated into a single controller that is typically located either on the motherboard or as an add-in, RAID card.
Related QuestionsHow do I install Windows XP on a Serial ATA (SATA) drive?
Hardware Knowledgebase - How do I install Windows XP on a Se...If you are installing Windows XP on a system where you only have Serial ATA Drives you might encounter a problem where Windows does not seem to detect your Hard Drive and reports "No mass storage device found" during an installation (this occurs in Windows NT and Windows 2000 as well). This is because there are no SATA HD drivers in Windows XP/2K/NT and you need to load 3rd party drivers (just like with many SCSI drives).

Hardware Knowledgebase - Top Rated FAQsEIDE, SCSI, or Serial ATA (SATA) drive is not recognized during the installation of Windows NT/2000/XP. The installer reports that there is no drive present for the Windows installation, even though the controller recognizes the drive. The drive may not be detected during the installation of Windows because you have not yet loaded the drivers for your EIDE, SCSI, or SATA controller.
Related QuestionsWhat are the advantages of Serial ATA over ATA?
Adaptec - 1210SA FAQsSerial ATA, the successor to parallel ATA for data storage, is a point-to-point connection that delivers full throughput to each storage device by allowing a single controller to manage multiple ports. Serial ATA technology starts at transfer rates of 1.5 Gbit/sec with a roadmap up to 3.0 Gbit/sec and ultimately up to 6.0 Gbit/sec. Serial ATA cables are thinner, simpler to route and install, and provide better airflow for system cooling than parallel ATA cables.
Related QuestionsQ12. Hard disk data rates have been growing ever two years. Why is Serial ATA being planned now?
welcomeA12. Serial ATA is an evolutionary replacement for the Parallel ATA physical storage interface and will allow future enhancements to the computing platform. Specifically, the thinner Serial ATA cable addresses OEM's concerns regarding airflow around the Parallel ATA cable and enables design of smaller PC chassis, as well as silicon vendors concerns regarding 5-volt tolerance support in future designs.
Related QuestionsWhat is a Hot Spare Disk Cartridge?
Kaleidescape - FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)A Hot Spare Disk Cartridge is an additional Disk Cartridge installed in a 3U Server that is immediately available as a replacement if a hard disk drive fails. If an active drive fails, the Server continues to operate, no content or user-entered data is lost, and information that was stored on the failed drive is automatically restored to the hot spare. This eliminates the need for an urgent service call and provides peace of mind in marine and other remote installations.

How is CE-ATA different than Serial ATA and why is Serial ATA not being pursued for this?
CE-ATASerial ATA is a high performance disk interface designed for mainstream computing applications. Handheld and consumer devices have a different set of technical requirements including modest transfer rates and maximum power efficiency. As a result of these unique characteristics, CE-ATA is focused on defining solutions for highly cost-effective integration and maximum power efficiency that will facilitate the incorporation of digital storage into handheld and consumer electronic products.
