From a comp.sys.apple2 usenet group posting of 31 Jan 1997 by pubpc1@library.ucla.edu (Scott Gentry) comes this information: How many times have you had this problem. You are looking through a CD-ROM and all of the sudden, you find an interesting file. Great, you think, it is a text file from the icon and filetype. You double-click on it, but your trusty Finder Extension chokes on the 20MB file. You then try AppleWorks GS.

Create one folder for WordPerfect and one for your documents. Copy all the contents of the /Utilities, /WordPerfect, and /Word.Lists disks into the WordPerfect folder. Launch WP.SYS16 from your hard drive. Select "Defaults" in the File menu and set the checkbox to not execute the STARTMAC macro on launch.

In WordPerfect IIe, press Open-Apple-? or Option-?. When the Help screen appears, press the letter that begins the name of the option that you want. The help screen shows both the full names of the commands and their keystrokes. Press Open-Apple-1 to leave the Help screen). In WordPerfect IIgs, you can access Help by pressing Apple-? and scrolling through the help items.

Well, this is explained in a file on the WordPerfect /UTILITIES disk (LASERWTR.HELP), but that explanation is confusing because so many of its details relate to obsolete system software. Here is my abridged version that assumes that you are using an AppleTalk network and System 6.x on your GS. COPY AND RENAME SOME FILES (ONE TIME ONLY) Copy the WordPerfect.FONT.

Please check if MS Word is installed on your computer. The program requires Word to count a WordPerfect file.

Some older GS games have been converted to run on a ROM 3. These are games that I found to not work (I tried all versions): I found a version of Streets Sports Soccer that runs on ROM 3-- it's the one without the crack screen on bootup. So that game is gone from the list now.

When the source is a large MPEG file the length of the video and audio must be checked because the MPEG header is unreliable (yet another flaw in the MPEG format). On a standard 52x CDROM opening a 700 MB MPEG file can take more than 20 minutes.

Sequential's driver allows the audio to work. It allows the Apple Hi- Speed interface to work with all new CD-ROM drives.

The Kzin Warrior published a block edit patch version in Computist #73 which lets you do this, at least on a ROM-01 GS. Using ProSel's Zap utility (also called "Block Warden") you search for $C9 08 00 D0 CE on the PaintWorks Gold diskette or a copy. (I found these bytes in Block $3D5 starting at byte $1DF.) Change the 08 to 7F and save the change. The Patch allows you to to start PWG under System 6 and use most PWG features.

You can use SpeedGS. This is a STARTUP program selector for ProDOS-8 on the Apple IIgs which features display of Boot Volume, Date/Time, and current Speed. Speed is shown as a rounded multiple of 'Normal'-- i.e. 1MHz. For download sites, see Csa21MAIN4.txt .

You can control the size of your slide show, watchibg status bar at the bottom of the main window, 3rd section—'EXE file—4 MB'). Go to Project options, Music tab and add music files (MP3, WMA, OGG, WAV, MID) which will play in your slide show. Note: After the last file's end the first file will be played again, and so on.

You will have to search the filesystem for files of the same size as the file you're reading, and compare information in them to find the file you're working on.

When LAS prints to the various word processor programs, it creates an RTF (Rich Text File) document formatted specifically for the selected word processor. However, when the file is opened, whichever program is "associated" with ".RTF" files will be the one to actually open the file. You could then find the "Start menu" link to it by looking in C:\Documents And Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs....

The chances are that you have Microsoft Word on your computer and you need to tell the computer to use Microsoft Word to open these documents. If you don't know how to change file associations stop by Computer Services on the sixth floor for assistance, or call 617-573-8352.

Microsoft Works documents can be opened in Microsoft Word or Excel, by choosing the appropriate option from the Files of Type menu in the Open dialog box. For word processing documents, select "Microsoft Works for Windows - .wps extension"; for spreadsheets, select "Microsoft Works - .wks extension". WordPerfect documents can be opened in Microsoft Word by selecting "Wordperfect - .doc or .wpd extension."

The compiler generated a very large COF file, why? A: Even though the file is large, it is valid and will work correctly. We have seen this happen with use of the CONFIG macro on the PICC-18 compiler. If you move the CONFIG macro to the top of the C file, this will fix the problem. Always be sure to install the latest updates for the compiler as these may fix the problem.

You can scan them together and upload them as "other" or you can scan them individually and upload them to the appropriate categories. Do whatever is more convenient for you but it's important that all the scanned pages are legible. Some claimants find it easier to scan like documents together so that the scanner settings will be optimized for each type. Orders, GBLs, estimates, for example are typically easy to read text.

The compiler hangs and produces a very large COD file, what's wrong? A: In order to support new features of MPLAB 6, some changed were required to the compiler. Some versions of the compilers include beta support for MPLAB 6 and in some instances a large COD file can be produced. If this happens, make sure you are using the latest updates for the compiler as this has been fixed. Back to top

Update: An exploit created by Toc2rta has been released. This exploit only allows for 64kb files to be executed within the user mode. This limits the creation and space for homebrew significantly and only pong (very simple pong) has been created for it so far. You can not post from non-Microsoft applications directly. You have to do it via the NT Explorer. Make sure that NT Explorer and Exchange are both open and that you can see both windows at the same time (you will have to size the windows so that you can do this). Find the file in NT Explorer. Make sure you can see the folder you want to place the file in. Select the file in NT Explorer and hold your mouse button down and drag the file until it is over the folder (it should highlight in blue).

Adding a hard drive is not much of a problem. Usually, you will need to insert an interface card, possibly connect a cable or two, and change a Slot setting in the Control Panel Desk Accessory.

You can use Peter Watson's MUG! program on your IIgs to transfer files via MS-DOS Iomega Zip disks. MUG! will let you read Zip disks on a IIgs equipped with a Zip drive and a SCSI interface. MUG is an NDA; so, it can be installed like other NDA's-- e.g. having the main MUG! file (probably MUG.1.01) in the System/Desk.Accs/ folder when booting. For easy use, start with a regular ProDOS Zip disk in your IIgs Zip Drive. Start a standard IIgs desktop program that does not test inserted disks.

Different data files can be used simultaneously for input in different modules (as mentioned before, different modules can process the same or different data files). From the File Manager, data files may be opened directly (into the STATISTICA File Server application, see below) by double-clicking on them. Each data file will be opened into a separate File Server application window (see the next topic); in this manner, you may simultaneously open as many data files as you wish.

Fonts, fonts and fonts. You need to have the same version of the same font from the same font foundry on both platforms if you want all spacing, line endings etc to be identical. Otherwise you will get font substitutions which may have a major effect on the layout. Other problems relate to graphic formats. TIFFs are relatively universal (there are differences but PM copes pretty well).

If you take your file to the actual store, make sure all the files you have on your media card/cd are all .jpeg files. Walgreen's, especially, has problems printing up photos from a cd that has .tiff, bitmap, and video files. Clear your cd or card of all files that are not .jpeg files.(back to top)
