It depends on how much time you have available outside of class. A general rule of thumb is that for every hour of class time, you will need to dedicate 3 hours of time outside the classroom. If you take a 3 unit class, this would amount to 9 hours outside of the classroom each week. If you are working full-time, we recommend that you start off taking one class your first quarter. Most students who are working full-time will take 2 courses per quarter.

Students are accepted in Autumn Quarter only. We have a formal curriculum, and the courses begin in Autumn Quarter. Also, the financial support is available in Autumn Quarter for one full year, and this money is guaranteed only in Autumn Quarter.

All ages of students are mixed together. Rather than separating by age, we separate by Japanese ability level, to ensure that students are in classes where they learn the most new material.

On-campus housing is provided for enrolled students. If for some reason you are not taking classes for one quarter within your housing contract this must be addressed as soon as possible (at least 30 days prior to the quarter concerned). After reviewing your circumstance(s), you will be informed by the HBU Housing office of the decision reached.

You may enroll in classes at another institution but a final transcript must be received by the Wednesday of finals week indicating a “C-” or better in all courses taken in order to graduate for that specific quarter. If the transcript is not received in time to confirm graduation you may participate in the ceremony but you will not receive your diploma. If the transcript is received by the 2nd Friday of the next quarter, your diploma will be granted.

E.M.I. is an interactive, web-based learning program comprised of a series of courses which provide instructors the opportunity to provide class content in various formats. You can take a cluster of interconnected classes together. The heart of the program is a linking seminar that helps you develop skills and abilities for success in college. There is a “Freshman Communities in Science” if you are interested in biology, medicine, and other health professions.

Students can submit an enrollment application anytime during the year, but must begin their classes at the beginning of the fall or spring semester, depending on capacity.
