This method became more and more obsolete with the introduction of ICQ 2000, since that version wasn't supported. Development on the kernel module seems to have stopped. The current best practice, is to forward a small port range per client, and configure the client accordingly. This way, the special functions (file transfer, chat, etc.) will also work.
