Yes. Modest amount of remote dial-in access is available free of charge to members of the Whitman community through Whitman's pool of thirty-two 33.6kbps modems. To connect to modem, you must first request a remote access account via a web-based request form at https://secureserver.whitman.edu/dialin/. To ensure fair access to this limited resource, remote connections are limited to 4 hours per session and a maximum of 8 hours per day.

There are several methods for computer connection, but it appears that Ethernet 10BaseT is emerging as the most predominant method. Although it probably would be cheaper to produce the cable modem as an internal card for the computer, this would require different printed-circuit cards for different kinds of computers, and additionally would make the demarcation between cable network and the subscriber's computer too fuzzy.

Generally yes. Recent Macintosh computers come with Ethernet built in and some products may have wireless as well. The Mac hardware and operating system[OS] has extensive networking functionality built in. You should check with Apple for details of connecting a Mac to your network.

With the current adapters you cant, the USB modem is the DSL equivalent of a WinModem and requires some processor power to perform the modem functions and convert the ATM data into TCP/IP for presentation to the PC. For wired connections users must fill out an IP address request form for each machine they want connected to the network. You will need to enter the hardware (MAC) address for the Ethernet card being used. We use DHCP to provide IP addresses for laptops, whether it is a wireless or wired connection. We will assign static IP addresses for desktop and server machines.

Morpheus will automatically connect to the network for you. Note that when you first launch the program, it may take moment for it to find suitable peers to connect to. Please be patient and allow Morpheus to connect to your peers. If using a firewall, make sure Morpheus has permission to access the internet.

Sure. Some companies use "Virtual Private Networking" software (VPN software) to let their employees connect to their internal systems and Web sites from outside the office. EarthLink Wi-Fi is generally compatible with VPN software. Contact your company's IT department to find out if this is available to you.

Check that the cable is connected between the modem and the telephone socket. There may be 2 ports for it to be connected to use the line port not the phone port. If necessary unplug it, then reconnect it. If you are connecting from your business telephone line you may need to dial a number to get an external line (usually 9).

Your Unwired modem connects to your home network in the same way that an ADSL or Cable modem would connect. This normally occurs via an Ethernet or USB cable attaching your modem to a networking device, such as a router. You should follow the instructions provided with your networking device as Unwired does not provide networking support.

Previously, we suggested that people use Mac modem cables; however, it has come to our attention that there is no one standard Mac modem cable. Since correct modem operation on a NeXT depends upon a correctly wired modem cable, buying a Mac cable is not a good idea. Some Mac cables do not allow dial-in and no Mac cable allows the use of hardware flow control. For these reasons, we are recommending that only cables that meet NeXT specifications be used.

Whilst the AViLYnX system uses the same distribution cable around the home as a computer network, they are not compatible systems. The AViLYnX does not transmit data in a digital format in the same way as a computer might carry data.
