Can I fit a transom to the Melanesia?

James Wharram Designs -Home of the self-build Catamaran.
I do NOT recommend you add a transom to the canoe, but rather make a side bracket, which we have seen used on canoe sterned canoes in the Pacific.

Can I add a transom?

FAQ
Yes, first build the kit and then fit a 3/4" plywood transom. Cut off the end of the boat flush with the transom. Caution should be exercised when using a motor. An electric trolling motor is more than adequate to propel a craft of this size.

How fit do I have to be?

Jitsuka: FAQ
How fit do you want to be? How fit should you be? The question really is "How fit are you prepared to be?". Running away is always the best form of self defence but you need a certain level of fitness even for that. Compared to many martial arts, Jitsu is not very physically demanding. There is no high kicking or power striking. You will be expected ( unless you are disabled ) to run round a room, get up from the floor and stay "warm" for the lesson.

It depends on the type of trip you want to take. To give you an indication of the difficulty of our trips we have graded into five categories. Some trips are classified as strenuous and should only be undertaken by those with plenty of experience and an above average level of fitness. However, the vast majority of our tours are well within the capability of any healthy individual leading a normal, active life.

What is the difference between the three Melanesia versions?

James Wharram Designs -Home of the self-build Catamaran.
There are basically two versions of the Melanesia, one for paddling, with a narrower centre-to-centre beam, and no mast or sail, and a sailing version, whith instructions for making a crab-claw sail. Apart from the obvious difference between the sail and paddle versions, the beam is a little wider on the sail version. The third option gives instructions for both versions.

What is the Maximum Loading for a Melanesia?

James Wharram Designs -Home of the self-build Catamaran.
The plans state that the max loading is around 100kg. In fact we have found that she will carry more weight. Obviously the freeboard will be a little less, but she certainly will carry the weight of two average people. Hanneke sailed the Melanesia many times with a friends of around 80kg, while she weight 63kg, no problem at all.

Can I build the Melanesia in foam core?

James Wharram Designs -Home of the self-build Catamaran.
Building the Melanesia hull in foam core and glass in a possibility. We think the best way to do this would be to use the flat panel method. Lay up a panel 16ft X 4ft, the same size as the original two sheets of plywood, then cut out all the parts as for plywood and assemble it also in a similar way by filleting and glass taping the joints. You can glass both sides of the foam at the beginning, but perhaps it would be better to glass just one side.

Can the Melanesia be used in surf?

James Wharram Designs -Home of the self-build Catamaran.
We think the Melanesia can be suitable for use in 2-6ft surf using the "Paddling Version" float and beams which are more suitable than the "Sailing Version" float and beams as they are lighter and stiffer. However, we would recommend you add watertight bulkheads and good buoyancy under the seats, so you are absolutely safe if flooded by a wave. Doing this will require a little extra plywood to the 2 sheets normally used to build her.

I have trouble paddling the Melanesia - what could be the problem?

James Wharram Designs -Home of the self-build Catamaran.
It is unusual for people to have trouble paddling the "Melanesia". Mike Ricks of Australia said his experience of paddling Canadian canoes worked on the Melanesia. The toe profile is good for sailing to windward. It might be better for paddling with the toe at the stern. This hull profile was used not only in the Pacific but the ancient Mediterranean and in ancient Norway.

Q8: How Does the Engine Mount to the Transom?

Classic Whaler: Boston Whaler: Reference: Frequently Asked Q...
Typically four bolts are used to mount an outboard motor to a transom. Generally, with a new engine, the manufacturer supplies the mounting hardware. The hardware is usually stainless steel machine screws of 1/2-inch diameter and threaded with the standard 1/2-13NC thread pitch. It is also seen that machine screws with finer pitch, 1/2-20NF, are used. On some engines the mounting screws may be metric fasteners of similar strength and size.

Classic Whaler: Boston Whaler: Reference: Frequently Asked Q...
It is believed that the hole arrangement currently in use by most engine manufacturers follows these dimensions: The top pair of holes are spaced 12 and 7/8-inch on center; each hole is 6 and 7/16-inch from the engine bracket centerline. The bottom pair of holes are spaced 9 and 7/8-inch on center; each hole is 4 and 15/16-inch from the engine bracket centerline. The centerline of the top holes is 2-inches below the top of the engine bracket.

I can't get access to the inside of the transom to connect the hydraulic fittings, what do I do?

Frequently Asked Questions
One of the unique features of the Bennett Trim Tab system is the use of concealed through-transom hydraulics. However, there are cases of complete inaccessibility inside the transom making the use of the standard Bennett actuator difficult. For such instances, the Bennett actuator is available with an external line connection. This avoids the inaccessibility problem by allowing the hydraulics to enter the transom at a location where there is no obstruction.

How big a motor can I put on the transom?

I believe the Coast Guard and other regulatory agencies limit it to 2 horsepower for a boat this size. Modern 2 hp outboards run about 28 pounds (12.7kg) I was half through the second Flapdoodle design when I found a sheet of luan [meranti] at Home Depot that is the best piece of plywood I have ever found of any species. I keep looking to see if they got more. Another sheet later from HD was so bad it was not usable for anything structural, yet it had a sticker from the manufacturer.

The fitter you are, the more you will enjoy it. Conversely, the less fit you are, the less you'll enjoy it. If you're extremely unfit, you may even fail to enjoy it to the point of collapsing in a lifeless heap somewhere along the way and having to be buried on the spot by your fitter companions. In the absence of any agreed universal measure of fitness, consider that for a somewhat unfit twenty-two year-old (me) it was difficult but manageable.

How should skates fit?

Done Right Sports Equipment Repair ... Frequently Asked Ques...
When purchasing skates, pick a reputable dealer. In Calgary, B&P Cycle or Tuxedo Cycle are good places to get fitted properly. Avoid shopping for skates on a Saturday. The more time a person has to spend with you, the better your fit. Start with something that you know is too small. If you are fitting yourself, you can pull the insole out of the bottom of the skate, and step on it to see how your foot relates to the skate size. Do not be deceived by narrow skates feeling too small.
