Parasites can be found in the feces of your pet. Some types of parasites can be found in the pet's bedding and around the anus. Because many parasite infections do not involve observable symptoms, it is important to visit your veterinarian regularly. Roundworms can cause a pot-bellied appearance in puppies and poor growth. Some signs of other types of internal parasites in your pet include a decrease in appetite, bloody stools, diarrhea and/or a decrease in activity level.

Although it is better to prevent internal parasites than to bear the cost and inconvenience of treatments and discomfort to your pet, dewormer prescriptions are available from your veterinarian. If your pet does have parasites, it is important to take him or her to the veterinarian as soon as possible, as some cases can be life threatening.

Internal parasites are organisms that live within an animal, gaining their nutrition and protection at the expense of the animal. Internal parasites are frequently referred to as worms. In our experience Soay sheep have been able to tolerate higher internal parasite (worm) loads than the modern breeds that we have kept in our drier climate in southern Oregon. However, current research on the St.Kilda island of Hirta has shown that internal parasite loads are an important contributing factor to mortality in years of population crashes when up to 60% of the feral sheep population dies. [Clutton-Brock. 2004] .

If your pet does have internal parasites, it is very important to get a dewormer prescription from your veterinarian. It is also important to have stool samples examined by your veterinarian every 6??"12 months and to maintain a clean environment for your pet by daily picking up any stools in the yard.

Due to the large number of internal and external parasites and the high risk of pet infection, controlling parasites year-round is the most reliable way to ensure the highest level of health for your pet and well-being of your family. Year-round prevention is the most effective way to control cat and dog parasites and the diseases they can carry.

Most intestinal parasites can be diagnosed through a physical examination and the microscopic analysis of your pet’s feces. Your veterinarian can conduct the examination and fecal tests to determine if your pet has worms and then prescribe the appropriate treatment or preventive program.

You should ask your groomer to specifically explain what prompted them to reach this conclusion. (i.e. Do they believe it is an intestinal or skin parasite?) Although there are qualified groomers who could probably make such a conclusion, we highly recommend that your pet be seen by a veterinarian so that if any parasites are present they can be properly diagnosed and treated. If you believe that your pet may have an intestinal parasite a fresh stool should also be screened. (see question #8)

A monthly treatment of ProGuard Plus is recommended for prevention of heart and some intestinal worms. Consult your vet before giving any treatments.
