Some seeders produce MD5 checksums for their WAV files, as well as for their SHN files. This is just an extra level of confirm to ensure exact copies of the original WAV files are being burned from the SHN files. Checking a WAV file with a MD5 cheksum is no different than checking a SHN file.

MetaSynth currently looks at the file 'type' rather than the file extension. AIFF files that originate on the Mac usually have the file type set correctly but files created on PCs usually don't. While the Internet is a good source for MP3's, for many people, the primary source for their MP3 collection is from their existing music collections (audio files, CD's, and analog recordings). This is particularly true for audiophiles, who may have extensive collections of analog recordings which are no longer in print. Converting older media to digital is commonly done in order to preserve the recording, so that it can be enjoyed without risking damage to the record or tape.

There is absolutely nothing special about the audio data encoded on a CD. The only difference between a "raw" 44.1KHz 16-bit stereo WAV file and CD audio is the byte ordering. It isn't necessary to convert a WAV or AIFF file to a special format to write to a CD, unless you're using some proprietary coding (like MP3 compression) that doesn't have a system-recognized codec. Similarly, you don't have to do anything special to audio extracted from a CD.

MP3s originating from cassettes are GREATLY discouraged. But it can be done, see the previous Q and A for the setup. Also note that because of the way that tapes stretch slightly using Joint-Stereo will often produce low-quality MP3s. Using an encoder with Dual-Channel or Stereo encoding options may greatly improve the quality of your MP3. Try using mpeg-2 encoding instead of MP3. You can use Folder Guard to restrict access to the CD-ROM or floppy drive, but that would not encrypt the files on the CD or floppy disk. It means that if you take the CD or floppy to another computer, without Folder Guard installed on it, the disc or floppy would NOT be protected. If you want to protect the removable drive so that it would be protected even if you remove it from your computer, you need some sort of encryption software to do that. (Folder Guard does NOT do encryption.)
