They are the size and shape of ping-pong balls with a soft shell. Usually eggs are spherical in shape, although occasionally, they are mis-shaped (elongated or adjoined with calcium strands). Some sea turtles lay small infertile eggs, which only contain albumin (egg white). The Leatherback turtle lays some of these small eggs in every clutch, whereas the other species of sea turtle lay these eggs infrequently.

Turtle nests are “flask” shaped; narrow and elongated at the top and wider and more rounded at the bottom. The depth of a nest depends upon the species, with larger turtles like the Leatherback constructing nests between 80cm-over 1m deep. Smaller species such as the Olive Ridley construct shallower nests to a depth of approximately 30cm. A turtle will dig down into the sand until she can reach no deeper.

Head lice eggs are a small bud like attachment to the hair strands, never on the scalp. They are variously described as white, grey or cream. Most are laid very close to the scalp where heat from the body keeps them warm however in a very warm humid climate they may be further away from the scalp. The further from the skin the more likely an egg is to be old, cold, empty or dead.

Vine weevil eggs are white when laid, approximately 0.8 mm in diameter and round. They rapidly turn brown as they mature. The eggs are often confused with slow release fertilizer pellets, such as ozmacote, when are found in common compost mixes. The ozmacote pellets are 2 mm in diameter, release liquid fertilizer when squashed and range in colour from yellow to dark brown.

Don't put your hands on or near the turtle. Any distractions may frighten and disorient her, causing her to return to the ocean before completely covering and camouflaging her nest.

Natural Predation–Many predators such as crabs, ants, raccoons, and birds target turtle eggs and hatchlings. If they are lucky enough to reach adulthood, sea turtles are relatively immune to predation, except for the occasional shark attack. Human Predation–Though most countries have laws against harvesting sea turtle eggs for food, the laws are not well enforced. Adult turtles are also harvested for meat, and their shells are made into jewelry and souvenirs.

The temperature of the nest determines a hatchlings sex. This is called ‘temperature -dependent sex determination’ (TSD). Warmer temperatures produce mostly females, and cooler temperatures produce a majority of males. There is a pivotal temperature that produces an equal ratio of males and females. The temperature determining sex ratio differs between species and nest locations.

They are never bigger than a sesame seed, you know the ones on a burger bun. And their colour varies between light golden brown and dark brown. When they first hatch they are very tiny, about the size of a grain of sand. Their color changes when they feed and fill up with blood, this makes them dark brown. As they digest their meal they turn lighter and lighter.

Typically sea turtles are solitary animals that spend most of the day feeding and resting. Sea turtles can sleep on the surface of the water, or on the bottom. Scuba divers often see turtles napping under rocks and ledges. Previous tagging and tracking studies have shown that sea turtles can migrate thousands of miles.

The largest species of sea turtle was the Archelon, which measured 7m in length and lived in Prehistoric times. Today, the largest living species is the Leatherback. There are 2 sub-species, the Pacific Leatherback and the Atlantic Leatherback. The Atlantic Leatherback is slightly larger than the Pacific population. Leatherbacks measure an average of just less than 2m in carapace (shell) length.

Depending on species, they may lay clutches containing on average 50-160+ eggs, and may lay more than one clutch in a season. Flatback turtles (endemic to Australian waters) lay the smallest clutches (approximately 50 eggs per clutch). Hawksbill turtles lay the largest clutches, which may contain over 200 eggs!

My job was 3-4 months on followed by 3-4 months off. If you work for a company sailing then your schedule is determined by then. Basically each job on the ship is filled by two people and you rotate with that person so you can work things out. If you need more time off and they are willing to stay longer well then you get more time off.

Sometime in June (in Ohio at least) you may well see a female box turtle laying eggs on your property. They prefer disturbed areas in sunny locations, so your garden or your driveway is a safe bet.
