Shilohs and GSD's share high intelligence, problem solving ability, and loyalty to their owners. Physically, Shilohs are larger than GSD's, and lack the sloping topline and extreme angulation seen in many American GSD's. Behaviorally, Shilohs tend to have lower prey and play drives than GSD's. Of course this is a generalization, as some line have more drive than others.

No. The gene for the plush coat is present in GSD's. However it is considered a fault and most breeders do not select for the trait. The plush coat is the most common variety of Shiloh Shepherd, however there is also a smooth coated variety.

Shiloh Shepherds are eager to please and learn very quickly with repetition, consistency, and positive reinforcement. As with any large dog, socialization and basic obedience training is essential to having your own canine good citizen. There are Shilohs who go on to compete in obedience, and some have gone to be Service Dogs as well as work in Search and Rescue.

Yes. The GSD is a "double-coated" dog with an undercoat and guard hairs. The guard hairs will be shed all year. The undercoat is "blown" twice a year. The shedding is pretty much constant, but a regular weekly brushing keeps things under control.

The correct GSD coat is relatively short with an obvious undercoat. As such it is quite waterproof. Some dogs are born with long coats which usually, though not always, are devoid of undercoat. Such coats are less useful and more difficult to groom, but many pet owners seem to like the long-coated version. Thus there is not strong selection against it, though very few breeders would deliberately breed from long-coated stock.

Yes and no to both. Most GSD's are eager and willing to learn and enjoy training sessions (don't overdo with a young pup - they just don't have the attention span). If you start young and teach your puppy its order in your "pack", problems with training will be minimized. However, GSD's tend to have more dominant personalities than some breeds and can be stubborn, so some care in training is recommended. Classes are extremely beneficial.

Shiloh Shepherds can make wonderful family companions. They do well with children and other small pets but need supervision until they are grown. Shilohs grow very quickly and can outweigh small children well before they reach 6 months old.

We do not breed for specific colours or extreme size for example, because they are not relevant to the goals of our breeding program.

The first dog to be shown as a GSD in the United States was a bitch named Mira v. Offingen (Beowulf x Hella v. Schwaben), in 1906. She was never registered with AKC and eventually, was returned to Germany. The first GSD registered with AKC was Queen of Switzerland (AKC # 115006). In 1913, Luchs – a dog owned by Anne Tracy – made his championship along with Hera von Ehrangrund. Miss Tracy’s breeding program produced white-coated GSDs almost immediately.

Georgia School for the Deaf is one of three state-operated schools in Georgia. The school was established by the state legislature in 1846 to educate deaf and hard-of-hearing children living in the state of Georgia. From GSD's opening until the present, the only break in the operations of the school was from March 1862 to February 1867, during which time the school was used as a hospital for both the Confederate and Union armies.

They are significantly different both in body structure and temperament. The BSD is a more elegant dog with lighter bone. The BSD stands four square and is the same height to the withers as it is from point of shoulder to croup, while the GSD has a long, sloping back and walks flatter on the foot. The head is finer and more chiseled, with smaller, high set triangular ears.

The Anatolian is a slow maturing breed and the newly acquired puppy is not an instant livestock defender. A puppy needs to learn the rules, and develop enough size and confidence to protect himself before he or she can be a reliable guardian. Some pups will show guardian behavior at 3 to 6 months, but they will command more respect from trespassers and predators once they are at least 8 months old. Confidence increases with maturity.

Anatolians can adapt to just about any type of weather, from the high temperatures of summer to the lows of winter. They can stay outdoors during most climatic conditions, with a good dog house for protection from the elements, and plenty of water in all seasons. It is a good idea to have extra shade for the dog to lie in during the hotter days of summer. During those hot summer days, Anatolians will frequently dig cavernous holes, rather than use a doghouse.

Shiloh Shepherds originated from AKC German Shepherds, with the addition of a malamute/white shepherd outcross in the early 90's. However, the Shiloh is still a breed in development, and most registries are trying to add depth to the gene pool by bringing in outcrosses.

The breed is naturally loyal, intelligent and protective (which makes it good for police work). The GSD has an excellent nose, making it good for tracking and search and rescue work. They are calm and have a steady temperament when well-bred which is why they have been used as "Seeing Eye" dogs. A GSD thrives on regular exercise, mental stimulation and a well-balanced diet. They are very trainable and love to work. The German shepherd is affectionate but generally not dependent.

Other than the normal precautions of immunizations beware of a fast-growing puppy. There are studies that show a correlation between fast growth and hip dysplasia (if your pup is predisposed to HD). You may want to switch your puppy over to adult food if it seems to be growing very quickly. Don't pet your puppy's ears backwards before they stand. Although people often do this by nature, it can damage the cartilage in your pup's ears which can affect the ear carriage.

There is no difference. After each of the World Wars, anything German fell out of popular favor. To avoid the use of the word German, "Alsatian" (from the Alsace-Lorraine area) was used. In some countries, GSD's are still known as Alsatians. The name in Germany is Deutsche Schaferhund which means "German Shepherd Dog". The word "Dog" is part of the name.

Most lines of GSDs will live to between 10-13 years of age. 11-12 years is probably a very reasonable expectation. A GSD becomes "middle-aged" between 5-7 years old, and is generally considered "geriatric" at about 10. Their food intake and exercise and nutrition needs may change over this period of time. They may begin to develop stiffness in their joints (much like people do as they get older).

Lacking mask, light to piercing eyes, as well as whitish markings on chest and inner sides of legs, light nails and red tip of tail are to be rated as lacking in pigment. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), which is the same association that accredits all public schools in Georgia, and the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf, (CEASD), which accredits deaf schools. Your local school system is responsible for transporting your child, whether your child is a day student or residential student.

Alsatian Riesling is generally allowed to ferment naturally and completely, so the wines are usually dry. Some late harvest (vendage tardive or VT) or SGN (Selection de Grains Nobles) wines are off dry to sweet like a German Sp?tlese or Auslese, but the vast majority of wine is bone dry.
