Re-plating is renewing the surface of your item with the appropriate metal, silver, gold, pewter, brass, through an electromagnetic process.

There are many problems associated with tin plating. One of which is whiskering, like cadmium and zinc, thin needle-like crystals known as "whiskers" form within a period after plating that may vary from a few weeks to several years. A whisker may measure up to .0001" (2.5um) in diameter, and grow spontaneously to a length of 0.375" (10 mm). Conditions that tend to promote the growth of whiskers are compressive stresses and uniform temperatures for long periods of time.

Regarding plating: Plating is not only cosmetic but it protects you from the very slight chance of brass poisoning. Our metal JodyJazz mouthpieces are made from a solid bar of brass. Then there are three layers of plating starting with Copper then Silver or Nickel and then the Gold. We use heavy Gold in 24kts. Over the long run the top layer of Gold can start to wear off. You are still protected from brass poisoning by the other two layers, which will not wear off.

Start with the least abrasive cleaning techniques before moving on to the more abrasive ones. Remember, nickel plating is p-l-a-t-i-n-g. Clean the nickel with a soft cloth (we use cloth diapers) & some rubbing alcohol or white vinegar. This should be done EACH time you use it and should get the fingermarks off. We have also used window cleaner. If that doesn't work, use a chrome polish such as Turtle Wax or FLITZ (you can call (888) 92-FLITZ for dealers near you).

With the exception of zinc plated parts, all zinc die-castings are processed as follows: preclean, mill, copper strike, and copper plate. Preclean: A two step process to remove most synthetic, petroleum, vegetable, and animal based fluids used in die-casting and machining operations. Mill: A controlled removal of the outer layer of die-cast. This process can remove flash, surface die-cast blisters, and modify dimensions if necessary.

It is not possible to calculate the life of the plating as it depends on various factors such as usage, climatic conditions like humidity and wear and tear. As a result, we cannot guarantee the plating life for any period of time. However we do guarantee the thickness of the plating. Our normal plating thickness for the various items, is as stated in the quick reference chart below, but we can manufacture and plate to any thickness of gold you prefer, if you can guarantee large volumes.

We give a base coat of Copper and then a top coat of Gold, Silver or Rhodium as you specify. The plating is hard acid Gold plating and is durable as opposed to the usual alkaline plating. Our rhodium plating serves to give each piece a very expensive look that is almost identical to platinum or white gold, but at a fraction of the cost. Also, rhodium plating is very effective in preventing the effects of oxidation, or tarnishing.

Rhodium plating is an electro plating process where a layer of Rhodium metal covers the silver finish. In this case, the finish is more darker (like steel colour). It gives it a rich look that also prevents the silver from reacting and tarnishing. However this process is expensive due to the high cost of rhodium. We charge USD 0.20 per gm as of year 2006.

Fretting is a common problem with Tin Plating. This is surface damage created when there is relative motions and strong contacts between parts, usually during shipping and handling. The tin plating shows black or worn spots caused by rubbed or scratched by another part. This oxide does not effect the parts functionally. They are still solderable. A way to eliminate fretting is by changing the type of packaging. (Layer packing or plastic trays are recommended) - Metal Finishing Guidebook 1997

Most platers tend to plate a specific type of part—wheel platers, brass platers, aluminum platers and pot metal platers. Each requires its own unique polishing and plating operation. We just never got into plating pot metal(die-cast/non metallic) parts.

Gold plating contacts should be used when your product needs a longer shelf life. Also if the switch will not be actuated for a long period of time after installation we recommend the use of gold plating.

According to the EU Commission, plating and coatings are “homogeneous materials” as they differ in composition from the substrate material. Keep in mind that in chemical analysis, platings and coatings are commonly removed from substrates by chemical means, and are not “mechanically disjointed” from the substrate. This is not such a big problem technically, however, since there are quite a few chemical methods for removing plating and coatings from surfaces.

The pull force for each magnet that we list has been tested in our lab, so we can assure you that the data is accurate. After the part has been base coated the piece cannot be touched, sanded or polished prior to the process because the plated surface will show up any sanding or swirl marks. As the years progress, the parts become less likely to be able to handle the requirements of the process we use. In our cleaning process, the temperatures required to strip a part may enlarge an already existing crack or bring out ones that may not have been visible prior to stripping.

We no not, however we can get zinc plating done for customers. We do all the preperation work, as if items are not cleaned up properly, the finished zinc plating will show all of the corrosion marks. Most zinc platers do not have the facilies to do this preperation work.

Yes, we can do micron gold plating. We have to work out the costing for each piece depending on the number of microns requested. We charge for the amount of gold deposited and a nominal labour charge for the process. Please be advised that we take extra lead time for the micron gold plating. Normally our charges comes $0.06/gm extra labour for micron plating and exact cost of gold consumed. We also need substantial quantity of order for micron plating.

White gold is an alloy (mixture) of yellow gold and other white metals such as silver and palladium. For example, 18ct yellow gold is made by mixing 75% gold (750 parts per thousand) with 25% (250 parts per thousand) other metals such as copper and zinc while 18ct white gold is made by mixing 75% gold with 25% other metals such as silver and palladium. Yes, if any of our products require plating or shot-peening, we send these springs, wire forms, flat springs and four-slide stampings to approved suppliers for plating and shot-peening. We bake (stress relieve) in our plant all springs, wire forms, flat springs, and four-slide stampings before the parts are sent to the plater or shot peener. Electroplated carbon steel parts are re-baked at 375?F after plating by the plater to reduce the susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement.

Pure matte tin provides a stable plating that is highly compatible with existing tin-lead solder processes and also Pb-free processes, such as those using a SnAgCu solder. Pure matte tin is a good choice from a manufacturing perspective. It is easier to control than plating of a multi-element alloy with a fixed composition. Pure matte tin has had significant use in the electronics industry and the plating chemistry is well understood.
