The Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) was enacted in 1999, directing the Fish & Game Commission to re-examine and redesign the State's system of marine protected areas (MPAs), and to adopt an MPA network. The purpose of the new network is to protect marine life and habitats, marine ecosystems, and marine natural heritage, as well as improve recreational, educational and study opportunities provided by marine ecosystems.

This 1996 Act amends the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act and establishes a strong, health-based safety standard for pesticide residues in all foods. It uses "a reasonable certainty of no harm" as the general safety standard. The Hauraki Gulf abounds with fish life. We have seen massive boil-ups of trevally and kingfish on a number of our trips to date. Also huge sunfish, sharks and flying fish. The Gulf is also home to a range of cetaceans (Bryde's Whales, Orca, Common and Bottle-nosed Dolphins).

Studies on existing projects have shown that some foundations can act as artificial reefs with a resultant increase in fish populations from the new food supply. It has been suggested that the noise from the turbine travel underwater and disturb sea life.
