Patients usually go home 4 to 5 days after epilepsy surgery, and can return to most activities after 2-4 weeks. A period of recuperation (usually 2-3 months) is necessary before returning to work or school. The patient will continue to follow up with his neurologist and neurosurgeon. Sometimes rehabilitation (physical therapy, occupational therapy, or speech therapy) is needed.

There is no magic test for any cancer to tell the doctors on the day the patient finishes treatment that they are cured or not. The only way to assure that the patient is cured is to follow them, periodically see them over time. The most important function of follow-up visits is to find cancer recurrence at its earliest stage when it can be treated most effectively. Taking good care of yourself and returning for your regular exams is a part of following through after radiation treatments.

Generally, physicians will follow-up with a 6-month visit and exam. Annual exams will probably follow as long as no changes or problems are noted. Quite often no further procedures are required. At 6 weeks if there are any small veins left over in the calf, they can be removed under local anaesthetic by making some tiny (2 millimetre) nicks in the skin, or by injecting them with a chemical (sclerotherapy – more info below).

Surgery is outpatient arthroscopic surgery to trim any bone spurs underneath the acromion and remove the thickened painful bursal tissue. Removal of the bone under the acromion is called a subacromial decompression (SAD).

Cataract surgery is an elective procedure, and whether it is performed depends upon each individual owner and animal. Surgery should not be performed on eyes with negative ERG's or with extensive scars and adhesions inside the eye. Some patients are poorer anesthetic risks than others, and some have poorer chances for success due to concurrent medical problems (diabetes, etc.).

Orbital surgery is needed to reconstruct or repair damage to the bony cavity around the eye caused by disease or trauma. Serious, advanced cases of Grave's Disease can cause a person's eyes to protrude to the point of vision loss. Orbital decompression, or the removal of bone tissue between the eye socket and sinuses may help. Sometimes a diseased or traumatized eye has to be removed.

Horses, like people, have baby teeth that are then replaced by a new set of teeth. This typically happens between the ages of 2 and 4 1/2. An adult male horse has 40 teeth, and female horse has 36 teeth. You often here the term "caps", these are baby teeth. A horse dentist should work on a horse's teeth every sixth months to a year.
