Some uncertainty comes from the fact that red imported fire ants vary in size (1/16 to almost 1/4 inch long), with the largest workers 2 or 3 times larger than the smallest. Native fire ants are less common in imported fire ant infested areas. Solenopsis geminata is the most common native fire ant species encountered. To the unaided eye, they are almost identical to red imported fire ants. However, S. geminata will have a few larger workers with large, square-shaped heads.

Along the Nexican border of Texas and in West Texas, there exist native fire ants that are difficult to distinguish from their imported cousins. However, if you can see four tiny teeth on the mandible or jaw of a fire ants, it is S. invicta. Native species possess three teeth. Over East, Central and much of South Texas, the most common native fire ant, S. geminata, can be distinguished without examination of tiny details of anatomy.

Although most ants are recognizable, some forms of winged ants are often confused with termites, especially during the termite swarming season. The front pair of wings on ants is larger than the hind pair, while the four wings of termites are approximately the same size. Ants have "elbowed" antennae and a "thin waist" (narrow between the thorax and first abdominal segments).

Both biological wisdom and recent research indicate that fire ants, like other opportunistic organisms, become more "weedlike" and achieve pest status when introduced into regions free of their natural biological enemies, such as parasites and pathogens. A case in point is the fire ant species native to Texas. Our native fire ant species is a is a minor nuisance at home, but a major pest in India where it was inadvertently introduced.

Red imported fire ants are medium-sized ants that build mounds of soft soil. They are rarely larger than 18" in diameter. In cold, dry areas such as the High Plains of Texas, mounds are usually much smaller and harder to detect. When disturbed, fire ants emerge aggressively and sting. Their sting usually leaves a white pustule on the skin. Other small to medium-sized ants that build small mounds will actually run away from disturbances and are not fire ants.

These are not ants, but rather a wingless solitary (non-social) female wasp in the family Multillidae. Females are wingless and typically colorful; males have wings. The common name for the group is "velvet ants." Here in Central Texas we have about 40 species of velvet ants, some small and some big. The "hiss" is called "stridulation" and is caused by washboard-textured body segments rubbing rapidly against one another.

Flying termites have straight bead-chain antenna, four wings of equal length and the wings are two times body length. Flying ants have elbowed antenna, front wings longer than hind wings and a pinched waste (middle of body). This is not the best site for Rhododendrons and Azaleas. They require acid soils (pH of 4.5 - 5.5), a moist but well drained soil, and part-shade conditions. Soil around the foundation is more likely to be alkaline and dry.

Fire Ants are very small, not large as some people may think. The colony or nest is very distinctive and easily recognized as a loosely compacted, finely granular dome (18 inches in diameter and 6 to 10 inches high) of soil that resembles a gopher mound.

Bloom refers to the slow rising of "essential oils" to the surface of a cigar. It first shows up as tiny (almost microscopic) crystals on the surface, and can eventually make a cigar look slightly "dusty" with a whitish finish on the surface. Not only is it harmless, some prefer to see a little bloom, as an indication of strong taste. Mold OTOH, is (ick!) a fungus, growing on overly humidified stogies.

Ants with wings are either female or male ants which have not reached maturity yet. At a certain time each year the mature males and females fly into the air to mate. After mating they lose their wings. The male dies. The female searches for a place to start a new colony as a fertile queen.

If you still have native ants, keep doing what you have been doing (or not doing). If you see an invading fire ant mound in an otherwise RIFA-free area, verify that it is not the native species before attempting to kill it. If you do treat such a RIFA mound, be sure to confine treatment to that mound or its immediate surroundings. Many observant folks notice that armadillos dig into fire ant mounds and correctly assume that they are eating the ants.

There are a number of differences between carpenter ants and termites. The body shape of a carpenter ant is like an hourglass--it narrows between the abdomen in the rear and the thorax in the front. The body of a termite is more cigar-shaped without the narrowing between the front and back halves of the body. When wings are present, carpenter ants have larger wings in the front and smaller wings in the back, whereas termite "swarmers" have relatively equal-sized wings.

In theory it is quite easy. The petals of the native Daffodil are the same length as the trumpet (the tube in the middle) and are paler in colour. They are also slightly twisted and relatively narrow. If these plants are growing in a broadleaved woodland and are widely scattered over a large area you almost certainly have a population of native Daffodil.

Seizures have a sudden beginning, a progression of symptoms, and a gradual recovery. Intoxication begins slowly and takes much longer to subside. Sometimes an intoxicated person will have a seizure, in which case there will be a strong odor of alcohol in addition to the seizure-cased behavior. In that case, the seizure will resolve, but return to full consciousness will not be as obvious. Whatever the cause, the seizure needs to be handled appropriately.

In the case of our native subterranean termites, their bodies will usually be jet black, whereas ant swarmers can be any color from red to brown, or any combination of colors.
