It's still on 2A, across the bottom of the page. We moved it down to allow for a news story on that page each day. Every day there are important stories that don't make it onto the front page, so we wanted to set aside more space for exceptional news.

Select how often you read, watch or listen to the news, on an average day. Options for this news field include: Rarely or never, Less than 10 minutes per day, 10-30 minutes per day, 10-30 minutes per day, 30-60 minutes per day, 60-90 minutes per day, 90 minutes per day or more, Decline to state and Not sure. Note that this field is also used to calculate a member's experience level.

This is generally discouraged, because newsreading in pine is buggy, and occasionally messes up newsgroups. tin is suggested instead, but if your heart is set on pine: Go to the Main menu, type 'S' for Setup, and 'C' for Config. Then use the arrow keys to get down to "nntp server". Hit 'A' to add a value, and specify "news.itd.umich.edu" as your server. Then hit to store the value, and hit 'E' to exit the configuration menu.

with many things in the new environment, this is up to your own personal preference. Most people prefer to read news with tin, though. This is because tin offers a fairly easy interface (that's a lot like pine's) for reading news in an organized way. trn, rn, and nn are also available for those who like those news readers.

Some people would rather get one really big message every day or so, rather than a lot of separate messages. That's a digest. You can get your jcnews in digest form by going to the yahoogroups.com website, registering, and modifying your subscription to the group. Or you can email Linda to do it for you. If you would rather not get email or a digest, but would rather just drop in from time-to-time, you can now read jcnews on the web. More info on that will follow, or you can go to yahoogroups.

Not really at this time. If you're at the console, you could use 'readmail' to read them reasonably efficiently, though you couldn't respond via mail or followup. (this may change with the new, reply-capable version of readmail). There are also a myriad of relatively ugly workarounds available in 1.65 making creative use of makebox.exe, perl, etc. to make the saved messages into a mail folder.

News" is an information service very much like a collection of bulletin boards. The news services is divided into "newsgroups" by topic. Each newsgroup contains a number of messages posted by people on this topic. New messages appear as they are posted, and old ones are erased to make room for new ones. A huge number of computers around the world support News, and these periodically exchange new messages among themselves.

You can modify the way you receive messages by going to the BIONICFANS Yahoo!Groups interactive member website at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bionicfans and clicking on the If you initially subscribed via email and have not registered Yahoo! ID you may still request Digest Format by sending a request to the list moderator (bionicfans-owner@yahoogroups.com). You may also read messages directly from the website.

The SCA Digest is the electronic mail version of the Rialto. One can subscribe and unsubscribe by sending email to SCA-Request@mc.lcs.mit.edu, requesting your addition to or deletion from the list. Expect this to take up to a week - the people running the Digest are volunteers with other work to do. If you read rec.org.sca, there is no need for you to subscribe to SCA-Request, as messages are gatewayed in both directions.

Included in the MS Internet Explorer package (and Netscape) is an integrated news reader. To read newsgroups, click on the 'Mail' icon on the toolbar then select 'Read News'. You will be prompted to ask if you wish to load the latest set of groups. Answer YES and the software will request the latest set of groups from the News Server. There are currently around 13,000 newsgroups on the TECH INFO news server and about 350Mb of new articles arrive each day.

Many types of templates may look confusing. In order to make it possible to design every detail, and to show more complex data structures, block-templates are needed. When we find a news article we feel is amazingly 'unknown' or outrageous, we place it near the top of the page, along with links to articles published by Unknown News. This generally accounts for the first few articles presented daily. After that, though, we make little or no attempt to "rank" the day's news by importance.
