You must be admitted into the College of Engineering upon entering Penn State as a freshman (ENGR student status). A student may attend the University Park campus or one of the Commonwealth College Campuses for the first year. By the end of First-Year Spring Semester, the student must have completed Math 140, Math 141, Physics 211, and Chemistry 12 with a C or better and have a GPA or 3.0 or higher to qualify for admission into AE.

The AE curriculum is a five year program because of the breadth and depth of material it covers. Our students take all the College of Engineering requirements, University general education requirements, and two years of architectural design studios plus other architectural courses. We have a year-long comprehensive senior project in the fifth year. Students study all the systems in a building, even though they specialize in one area.

Yes. The student may study one year at a Commonwealth Campus. Students should conform their program of study to the AE Curriculum. At the end of the first year, Commonwealth Campus students are subjected to the same criteria as University Park students in the Entrance to the Major process. Systems Design Engineering (SyDe) is a unique program that originated at the University of Waterloo over 30 years ago. You will notice that it has the word “Design” in the name. Our program focuses on teaching our students methods for designing products, tools, tasks, and systems. The methods and approaches we teach are applicable to the design of almost any product, tool, task or system.

It is not impossible but very difficult to transfer into Systems Design Engineering. We are limited to the same number of spots in the program for the 2nd year as there are in the 1st year (90 students). If there are spots available, then a transfer is only considered if the student is very strong academically and will be a good fit with the SyDe program. Students who are interested in transferring must go through the internal transfer process set out by the University of Waterloo.

Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) not Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng). Some universities will give a B.Eng. However, it is only the name that is different. Both programs are CEAB accredited.
