Should we feed the waterfowl at the parks?
FAQNo, please do NOT feed the waterfowl. Parks and Recreation is working with the USDA Wildlife Service to protect the health of our park birds and wildlife. Please do not feed the geese or ducks. Feeding these wild animals creates dependence, promotes the spread of disease, and upsets the natural cycles. The birds foul our beaches and parks, pollute our water, and drive away timid species. Thank you for your cooperation.
Related QuestionsI was told that you cannot feed waterfowl medicated feed, is that true?
QAnswer: No, waterfowl are no different from any other bird in that regard. Medicated feed can be fed, but is generally not recommended unless your flock has a chronic (repeated) problem that you need to combat. The danger in feeding medicated feed when no specific medical problem exists is that you may be not only wasting money, but you may be encouraging the development of strains of bacteria resistant to that particular medication. When you really need it, it may no longer be effective.

Related QuestionsWhy can't I feed wildlife (deer, ponies, waterfowl, etc.)?
Frequently Asked QuestionsWhen you feed any wild animal you help them to lose their fear of people. When this happens they become more dependent on people and therefore less willing to survive naturally. They also become potentially dangerous as well as a nuisances and traffic hazards to people. This is especially true for the ponies that will bite and kick. Refuge animals are capable of finding plenty of food on their own. They don't need people food which is unhealthy for them anyway.

Related QuestionsDo you believe in double clutching your waterfowl?
QAnswer: Here's a confusing answer, yes and no! With many of the easier to breed common species double clutching seems to do no harm at all. In others, such as spectacled eiders it appears to exhaust the female, causing health problems later that year. There also are species, like harlequins that practice "nest fidelity", or loyalty to a particular nest site year after year. In their case, taking an entire clutch can force them to abandon their nesting.
