Part of the ati-drivers ebuild attempts to compile the fglrx module against your current kernel. The other part will install various other files (OpenGL libraries etc). However, the ebuild will not fail if the fglrx module can't be compiled, so unless you watch the output closely, it's easy to miss this. The usual reason for the module failing to compile is that your kernel is too new and/or heavily patched.

fglrx requires 64bit GCC 3.3 C++ libraries to build (cxxlibs-6.0.3-x86_64-1) and the 32 bit c/ compatibility packages. Install those libraries, and then get fglrx64 (not fglrx) from ATi's website. You may also need the 32bit compatibility packages in Slamd64, and the driver may require further patching if you want to use it on the latest kernel.

ATI’s standard Catalyst driver stream supports the MCE operating system. Most recent display drivers for Windows XP Media Center Edition are located from the Drivers & Software site.

The ATI binary drivers are at present the only drivers which support 3D acceleration on cards based on the R3xx and R4xx chipsets. This includes recent cards such as the 9500, 9600, 9700, and 9800 series, plus the high end mobility chipsets and X-series cards. effort to develop an opensource driver for the high end Radeon chipsets is underway here. If you want to try this driver, be aware that it is still under development and that you may encounter serious problems.

No, although this is one of the requested features (see here). Until ATI add support for it, 24 bit colour is the usual alternative.

Yes, NVIDIA and ATI provide drivers that work on AMD64. You can install them by executing emerge nvidia-kernel or emerge ati-drivers. If you have more questions about these drivers, you should read the Nvidia guide or the ATI FAQ.

The tweaker knows about the ATI tabs, the ATI tabs don't know about the tweaker. The ATI tabs remain resident in ram, they only check the registry the first time they are loaded. If the tweaker responds to changes in the ATI tabs, everything is working fine. If you want ATI to change it's tab behaviour you will have to contract ATI.

If the messages mention "sleeping function", try disabling the Sleep inside spinlock checking option in the Kernel hacking section of the kernel config menu. If you still get errors, try disabling the Hangcheck Timer option in the Character Devices section of the kernel config menu (same place as the AGP options).

The MS Windows 2000 release CD include drivers for RAGE 128, RAGE XL, RAGE XC, RAGE PRO, RAGE LT PRO, RAGE IIC, RAGE II+, RAGE II, and mach 64/VT. Windows 2000 drivers will not be made available for legacy or discontinued products.
