TrueType fonts have to be printed as graphics which means that a lot of data needs to be sent to the printer. Current serial and parallel ports have a limited speed which means that the printer will often have to stop and wait until it has received a complete line of data. Our drivers contain some 'resident' fonts which use the font that is built-in to the printer.

If neither your X server nor your X font server supports you can try one of the TruType font servers: xfstt (http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/X11/fonts/) or xfsft (http://www.dcs.ed.ac.uk/home/jec/programs/xfsft/ .

The way the PcW works is that it effectively draws a complete image of the page to be printed inside it's own memory and then sends this to the printer as a pattern of on/off dots in "graphics" mode - it does it this way rather than using the fonts within a printer so that it can do all the different point sizes, bold, italic, underline styles that it offers. These would not be available if it used the printers "text" mode.

If you are printing a few common graphics (such as a logo at the top of a receipt. Then you may be able to use Logo Store. Logo store enables you to permanently store up to 255 graphics in the printer and is supported by all of our printers which have a FlashROM (TSP600, TSP700, TSP800, TUP900). Once you have your logo's stored in the printer you can use the 'control' font (see answer C-3 for an explanation for the 'control' font) to ask the printer to print them out.

While XFree86 does not, at the time of writing, natively support TrueType fonts, there is a number of third party solutions. Some information about these options is included below. If you're using the TEXT option in MasterWorks, there is a check box option on the TEXT PROPERTY box labeled "TTF". Check that box if you want MasterWorks to display your system TrueType fonts. There is a problem (which we are working to fix) that results in a crash at the end of a render when the 'Artmatic Sound' option is active when rendering. Most people naturally associate TrueType fonts with text. Arial, Courier New and Times New Roman are all examples of standard TrueType fonts containing text. There is, however, another standard TrueType font called Wingdings that contains symbols instead of text. Typing ‘abc’ produces symbols rather than text. While the 4-Sight Fax client is a java application, it must go through the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) for printing. Because the JVM creates temporary files for each print job, these files can become so large that it may take a long time to process. Users will experience no noticeable slowing of normal print jobs. Very large jobs may experience a few seconds delay as the job spools to the printserver.

Linux Xprt build from http://xprint.mozdev.org/'s source supports TrueType fonts out-of-the-box (starting with the 008 development tree; xprint.mozdev.org's releases <= 007 do not support TrueType fonts) and and does not require any special actions. Sun's Xprt on Solaris (/usr/openwin/bin/Xprt) has TrueType font support out-of-the-box and does not require any special actions.

Many sources will tell you that TrueType fonts—a technology developed by Apple Computer in partnership with Microsoft—are buggy and unstable, and indeed, some are. But in our experience, the problems are isolated to a few bad apples (no pun intended) that we rarely see. We always try to accommodate our customers' files as best we can. So, our feeling is that if you have to use TrueType fonts as opposed to Type1, so be it.

Postscript fonts consist of two files, a screen font and a printer font. As it is used today it is a format developed by Adobe and adopted by other font foundries. It is used primarily by high-end imagesetters who prefer it because the relationship between screen image and printed output is more reliable. In most cases you need Adobe Type Manager to use Postscript fonts effectively. TrueType fonts consist of a single file which contains both the screen and printer versions of the font.

Your PSW 2.00a as it is now, without the Option, digitizes TT fonts in the lettering part of the software with a Complex Fill step satin or satin stitch. With Complex Fill stitches, you only have one stitch inclination. With step satin fills, this may give an adequate finished result, but usually not as pleasing as the built-in fonts. With Satin fill stitches you can have very long stitches, which are easy to catch and snag.

Adobe PostScript® Type 1 is a worldwide standard for digital type fonts (International Standards Organization outline font standard, ISO 9541). It was first developed by Adobe Systems for use in PostScript printers. Although Adobe is a leader in the design and manufacturing of Type 1 software and maintains the standards for Type 1, hundreds of companies around the world have designed and released more than 30,000 fonts in the Type 1 format.

When printing the same document to both a 300 dpi device and a 100 or 200 dpi device, you may frequently see a difference in font size. Though the fonts are scaleable, the scaling will only be to the nearest dot. A TrueType character rendered to 37 pixels tall on a 300 dpi DeskJet, will be 24.7 pixels tall to be the same size on a 200 dpi fax. Since only an integral number of pixels can be used, 24.7 must be rounded to either 24 or 25 pixels.

The fonts used in quick check printing are the default fonts from your Windows operating system and cannot be changed from within PCLaw. Some printers allow you to change the font directly on the printer itself. You can, however, use alternate fonts if you de-select Quick Check Printing and use a check template on the Banking tab of Options - System Settings. You can change the font by modifying the check template in Tools - Template Editor.

Regular fonts are designed primarily to be printed at high resolution. Pixel fonts are designed at low resolution especially for screen display. When you view a regular font on the screen, you are seeing an approximation of what will appear on a printed page and it is usually compromised because of the screen's relatively low resolution.
