OpenType is an extension of the TrueType font format, originally developed by Apple Computers and Microsoft, in the 1980’s. The intention was to compete with Adobe’s Type1 font format. One of the key developments of TrueType has been the introduction by Adobe of PostScript font data into the format as CFF (Compact Font Format) data. PostScript CFF is now being used as the base format for OpenType fonts containing Type1 data.
