We are a small breeding farm and stand only one stallion at the present time. We try to limit our outside mares so that each one gets enough special attention from us - and from Medicine Man ! -- to assure that she gets in foal. Artificial insemination and semen preservation techniques make it possible to ship stallion semen to mares nearly anywhere in the country. Success with transported semen will depend on the careful reproductive management of both stallion and mare. Only three registries do not currently allow AI: Thoroughbred, Miniature Horse, and Standard Jack and Jennet Registry.

Even under the best conditions, transporting horses long distances can be stressful and costly. Mares with foals are of special concern, since foals are particularly vulnerable to disease and injury when exposed to new horses and environments. Older or injured mares, or those requiring special care, may also benefit from staying closer to home during breeding season.

Unlike fresh semen, which can live in the reproductive tract of a bitch for 5-7 days, frozen semen will only live 12-20 hours once thawed. It must preserve all it's energy to penetrate and fertilize the eggs, so the best conception rates (90% in our practice) are achieved with surgical insemination, where the semen is injected directly into the uterine horn. Since vaginal insemination has statistically low conception rates (under 20%), we do not suggest using your valuable semen in this fashion.

The acronym ANKC stands for the Australian National Kennel Council. The ANKC comprises all the Australian states/territories Kennel Controls. The Asian HPAI H5N1 has not been found in Maryland or anywhere in the U.S and Canada (not in people, poultry or wild birds). Canine semen can be collected and preserved with state of the art extender products to provide necessary nutrients and cryoprotectants to the sperm cells during the process of chilling, freezing in liquid nitrogen vapors and then in liquid nitrogen itself.

Semen is a mixture of cells and fluids from each organ in the male reproductive tract: the testis, epididymis, seminal vesicles, prostate and urethra. Therefore, in addition to sperm from the testis, semen contains other components which may be important indicators of your health. Some infections may have no symptoms, although they may have lasting health and fertility implications.

Historically, semen specimens have been tested only for fertility. Fertility tests usually include measuring how many sperm are moving, which means the semen specimen must be examined by a skilled laboratory technician within a short time of ejaculation. This poses obvious problems for everyone.

The number of straws required per insemination is determined by thawing a straw and rating its post thaw motility. For a frozen semen breeding you want to have a minimum of 100 million motile sperm per insemination. Each straw holds 50 million sperm but not all of them will survive the freezing process, hence the evaluation of "post thaw motility". The higher the percent post thaw motility the fewer straws are required.

The core of this method consists of facilitating the way of a sperm to the egg by injecting sperm, after special laboratory preparation, by means of a thin tube into the uterine cavity during the period of ovulation. The basic prerequisite for the application of this method is the preserved permeability of the Fallopian tubes. IUI can have a therapeutic effect in cases of disorders in male fertility, immunologically conditioned infertility and also in other indications.

Wild Birds: The LPAI form is endemic in free flying wild birds and cannot be prevented. While many birds migrate long distances and may spread LPAI within wild populations, LPAI from wild birds is not readily transmitted to poultry and has not been transmitted to humans. In Asia, captive poultry raised outdoors may have transmitted HPAI to wild birds. Biosecurity on poultry farms, in live bird markets, and in international trade is the key to prevention of AI.

The Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens considers that the risk of transmission of AI from wild birds to the general public is small. However, to minimise any risk it is advisable to carry out general hygiene precautions when handling wild birds, such as wearing disposable protective gloves when picking up and handling carcases and washing hands, nails and forearms thoroughly with soap and water after handling the carcase.

After WWII, a number of people independently started to work on intelligent machines. The English mathematician Alan Turing may have been the first. He gave a lecture on it in 1947. He also may have been the first to decide that AI was best researched by programming computers rather than by building machines. By the late 1950s, there were many researchers on AI, and most of them were basing their work on programming computers.

Culture medium is layered on top. The specimen is left in the incubator at 37 degrees Celsius for one to two hours. The highly motile sperms will swim up into the culture medium. The enriched upper layer is then removed and sent to the clinic where it is flushed into the uterus using a flexible catheter. This procedure is performed during the time of ovulation in order to increase the chance of conception.

To be honest, we cannot give you any specific treatment plans in advance, Dr. Tippet will review your daily blood tests daily and make his clinical decisions based on those results. He will determine the timing of these procedures to enhance your chance of conception. Be prepared to be available for testing at least 7 times during the first two weeks of each cycle.

Most doctors will do an intra-uterine insemination (IUI) the day after the LH surge, or about 36 hours after it is detected. With a vaginal insemination, or an intra-cervical insemination (ICI) in someone with good fertile mucus, the day of the surge may be preferable. First, obtain a few 5cc syringes and specimen cups. Don't use a syringe larger than 5cc; it's not necessary. Sperm sample volumes range from .5cc to 4cc, with an average of about 1cc to 2cc. Also, in case you're wondering, don't use a needle with the syringe. It is dangerous and would likely damage the sperm, not to mention you! The syringe and specimen container should be clean and dry. If you wash and re-use them, be sure there are absolutely no water droplets left anywhere.
