This is a conflict between some system BIOSes and the SanDisk Cruzer Micro flash drive. It is not related to the busTRACE software. If your system exhibits this problem, the system might appear to hang during Windows boot when you have our dongle (i.e. SanDisk Cruzer Micro) installed in a USB port. If you remove the dongle, the system continues to boot just fine. You can plug the dongle back in and everything works fine.

All computers are equipped with multiple ports for inserting USB devices. Most workstations have a USB cable that is attached to the table for more convenient access to the ports.

Encrypt the entire USB flash drive. However, you will not be able run TrueCrypt from the USB flash drive. Create a TrueCrypt file container on the USB flash drive (for information on how to do so, see the chapter Beginner's Tutorial, in the TrueCrypt User Guide).

I got this working on a 256M Sandisk Cruzer Mini, but the procedure should be the same for any USB drive. I used a Linux machine to prep the drive. You can probably use a Windows machine to do all of this stuff; if you figure it out, feel free to let us know and we will update these instructions. First, I needed to repartition and reformat the drive, because the original partition table was an unholy mess which confused the boot loader.

The most common reason for this problem is the absence of a bootable master boot record or active partition on the target disk. When using the Copy a specific drive method to copy one drive to another, Casper Tech Edition does not replace the master boot record or change the active partition status on the target disk. In order to ensure the target disk contains a valid master boot record and the appropriate partition is marked active, it is necessary to use the Copy an entire hard disk method.

Don't expose your laptop to resonating noises, for example loud bass noise from speakers, heavy machinery.

A driver is required for systems with the Windows 98 SE (Second Edition) version installed (some elder versions of Windows 98 will not support USB devices). All newer versions of Windows (newer than Windows 98 SE) do not require a driver for USB flash devices. Windows NT (all Service Pack versions) will not support "Plug-n-Play" devices. Therefore USB flash drives will not work on such systems.

A Before plugging your USB Flash drive in, download and unzip the drivers from http://www.ipsgproducts.com. Browse to C:\usbflash\USB Flash Disk 98 Driver and open USB Flash Disk Win98 Driver.exe. Once the installation has finished insert your flash drive into an available USB port on the computer. The flash drive will now be recognized and show up in My Computer.

Additional manufacturer's operating software (a.k.a. driver) is not needed for most Windows operating systems*. However, USB Flash Drives will not work with the Windows NT operating system because Windows NT does not support USB. The original retail package for each flash drive has the model number printed on the back of the insert card that contains your flash drive device type.

If you have a IDE Zip® or Jaz® drive installed, remove it and try again. The boot floppy can get confused by the drives. After the system is installed you can reconnect the drive. Hopefully this will be fixed in a later release.

On a Windows 98-based computer, when Universal Serial Bus (USB) legacy support is enabled in the basic input/output system (BIOS), your computer may not detect USB devices or may stop responding (hang) when you start or shut down your computer. Note: Do not use this workaround if you are using a USB keyboard, because this will disable the keyboard during the boot process until Windows starts.

Booting from a USB drive is possible on all Macintosh models beginning with the Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics) and the slot-loading iMac (See Apple Knowledgebase Article # 58430).

Most laptops now use lithium ion (LiIon) batteries. LiIons should be managed differently from the NiCad or NiMH batteries used in older laptops. In particular, LiIons should not be run all the way down to prevent "memory effect". First, they don't have a memory effect, and second, running them down tends to reduce their capacity. If the laptop does not need the battery it should be run to about 40% charge and stored in a cool place.

Right-click on the "Removable Disk" icon with the drive letter assigned to your Mobile Mini or Mini Flash Drive. Optional: Type in a name in "Volume label" if you have more than one USB Flash Drive and prefer to assign names to differentiate them. Click on "Start" button. A warning notice appears that all data will be erased. Click "OK" button.

With your computer turned on, you plug your USB Flash Drive into a free USB port (often these are located in the back of your Windows PC or Macintosh). Once attached, your computer should recognize the drive as a new volume mounted on your machine. If for some reason your computer does not find your Flash Drive after it has been plugged in for the first time, a system reboot may be required in order for it to be recognized.

USB flash drives are using the USB protocol to interoperate with PCs (Macs too!) and devices with a USB port. Typically USB Flash Drives use mass storage class drivers that are incorporated in Windows Me, Windows 2000 and Windows XP or later as well as Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X or later as well as Linux 2.4.6 or later. Some manufacturers offer drivers for Windows 98 SE or Windows NT. Apple offers a mass storage class driver update for Mac OS 8.6.

A A green icon means that you are viewing the public partition of the USB flash disk. A red icon means that you are viewing the private partition of the USB flash disk.

Certain Micron motherboards have a non-conforming PCI BIOS implementation that causes grief when FreeBSD boots because PCI devices do not get configured at their reported addresses. You can then make your computer boot on this CD-ROM (and make sure your Mandriva Flash USB key is plugged), it will automatically use the Mandriva Flash USB key. Once Mandriva Flash is booted, you can eject the CD-ROM.

Hewlett Packard provides a custom USB port driver that we were not monitoring. Support has been added in a maintenance release of busTRACE. Please download the latest busTRACE 2002 update.

R-Studio works on Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003 only. It will not work under DOS or another operative system which fits into one bootable floppy. Therefore, you should attach your hard drives to another computer which can boot to Windows, and then restore files on that computer using R-Studio. No matter how that system recognizes your drives, R-Studio should access it.

The USB port supports connection to a single USB mass storage device. USB hubs to add more ports are not supported. For devices with multiple partitions, only the first partition is supported. Devices with secure partitions are not supported.

A USB flash drive typically consists of a controller with a USB interface and a non-volatile memory interface that is connected to one or multiple non-volatile memories (lower level or higher level of integration are possible), Hi-Speed UFDs typically use a crystal for external clock generation, a LED is typically used as optical activity indicator, possibly a write protect switch is controlling the write access and some other components are used for the remaining circuitry.

After associating FreeOTFE with ".vol" files from the options dialog, I doubleclicked my ".vol" volume file, and nothing happened!

The Image MASSter displays the error message "Internal Settings are Invalid" or "Stored Configuration Data is Corrupted."
