There are different kinds of eye cancers. Below are some of the places near or on the eye where cancers can grow and the types that may be present on each one of these places: Eyelid tumors. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of eyelid cancer. It can be removed with surgery. Other types of eyelid tumors include squamous cell carcinoma, sebaceous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma. Tumors that grow on the surface of the eye (conjunctival tumors).

There are hundreds of different types of cancer. They are identified by the type of body tissue involved or by the body part involved. The major classifications of cancer are: Carcinoma: a malignant tumor found in the outermost covering or lining of body surfaces or organs. These tumors are found on the skin, in the mouth and throat, stomach and bowel, or in organs like the mammary gland, liver, lung or bladder.

The term, ovarian cancer, is used to refer to a malignancy of the outer lining or epithelium of the ovary. The most common subtype is called papillary serous carcinoma because of the frond-like appearance microscopically. The second most common subtype is endometrioid. Mucinous and clear cell carcinoma are less common subtypes and tend to have a poorer prognosis.

Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma are the three types of skin cancers. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are the most common types and less dangerous than melanoma. They usually occur on sun-exposed areas of the body such as the face, neck and hands. Melanoma is the most serious because if it is not treated early, it is more likely to spread throughout the body.

There are two main types of esophageal cancer. The most common type of esophageal cancer, known as adenocarcinoma, develops in the glandular tissue in the lower part of the esophagus, near the opening of the stomach. Squamous cell carcinoma grows in the cells that form the top layer of the lining of the esophagus, known as squamous cells. This type of cancer can grow anywhere along the esophagus.

There are two main types of lung cancer: non-small-cell lung cancer and small-cell lung cancer. Non-small-cell lung cancer accounts for about 80% of lung cancers. They include a heterogeneous group of cancers that grow and spread less rapidly than small-cell lung cancer. By contrast, small-cell lung cancer accounts for 20% of all lung cancers. Although the cells are small, they multiply quickly and form large tumors that can spread throughout the body.

There are several types of cancer that start in the bones. The most common is osteosarcoma, which often develops in new tissue in growing bones. Evidence suggests that Ewing's sarcoma (see Ewing's family of tumors), another form of bone cancer, begins in immature nerve tissue in bone marrow. Osteosarcoma and Ewing's sarcoma tend to occur more frequently in children and adolescents, while chondrosarcoma, which starts in cartilage, occurs more often in adults.

The newest method for treating cancer is immunotherapy, a process that relies on the body's immune system to combat the disease.

After heart disease, cancer is the second most common cause of death in Western societies. In your lifetime, the risk of developing some kind of cancer is greater than one in three. There are perhaps 200 different types of cancer, but many are rare. The most commonly diagnosed are non-melanoma skin cancers, many of which are easily treated. For men, the next most common three types of cancer are prostate, lung and bowel. For women, breast cancer is most prevalent, followed by lung and bowel.

There are several different types of breast cancer. Most breast cancer occurs in the milk ducts of the breast-the tubes that carry breast milk to the nipple. This breast cancer is called ductal carcinoma. A second, but less common form of breast cancer occurs in the lobules-where breast milk is made. This breast cancer is called lobular carcinoma. Papillary carcinoma is the most common kind of thyroid cancer. It occurs in 70 to 80 percent of people with thyroid cancer. Most people are in their forties when this cancer is found. It is sometimes called papillary cancer or papillary adenocarcinoma. This kind of cancer starts in the thyroid follicle cells. Follicular carcinoma is the second most common type of thyroid cancer. It occurs in 10-20% of people with thyroid cancer.

The vast majority of kidney cancers are renal cell cancers. Most of the others are cancers of the renal pelvis. There are several types of renal cell cancers. Most are classed as 'clear cell' or 'conventional'. A smaller number fall into other types, which are called papillary, chromaphobe, collecting duct and unclassified renal cell cancers.

There are many different kinds of cancer depending on where in the body the cancer starts and the type of cell involved. The most common types are prostate, breast, lung, and colorectal cancers. Out of every twenty cancer diagnoses, about three will be breast cancers, three will be prostate cancers, three will be lung cancers, and two will be colorectal. There will be about one in the bladder or kidney, one in the ovary, uterus or cervix, and one will be a lymphoma.

Be sure to discuss with your cancer care team any/all possible side effects of treatment before the treatment begins. Most side effects disappear once treatment is stopped. The following are common chemotherapeutic drugs usued to treat breast cancer. Doxorubicin (Adriamycin) is an intravenous medication.

Most of these treatments can be applied to most cancers, with the exception of brain tumors and leukemia. Those cancers require substances that are able to pass the blood/brain barrier, or penetrate into the bone marrow.

Cervical cancer "in situ", is not required to be reported to the Registry, and are not included in the statistics. Certain skin cancers are not reportable unless they are diagnosed at an advanced stage.

Yes. Orthodox or "conventional" therapies are well covered in the medical literature so the results of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, and surgery are well represented. In addition, the newer modalities such as biological therapy, immunotherapy and gene therapy are also covered. Alternative therapies are also reported, but less frequently because so few of them are actually tested.

A: Some types of cancer (including melanoma and cancers of the breast, ovary, prostate, and colon) tend to occur more often in some families than in the rest of the population. It is often unclear whether a pattern of cancer in a family is primarily due to heredity (due to gene mutations), factors in the family environment or lifestyle, or just a matter of chance. Most cancer causing gene changes are the result of factors in lifestyle and environment.

Currently, research is being done to determine the effectiveness of cryotherapy for tumors of the brain, kidney, bone, lung, and spine. In addition, researchers are evaluating its usefulness in freezing and shrinking benign breast lumps.
