Many people are surprised to discover how economically and efficiently United Way for the Greater New Orleans Area is run. For every dollar raised, we spend less than 15 cents on operating costs. These expenses include marketing and fund raising, accounting and other basic business functions. More importantly, they include all of the work we do to determine our community goal areas, distribute dollars to programs that address those goals, and monitor agency performance and results.

United Way is a system of 135 coordinated services working within three goal areas to change, in measurable ways, individual lives and the face of our community. United Way also plays a catalyzing role that has resulted in new collaborative organizations such as Unity for the Homeless, the Children’s Services Collaborative and the Center for Non-Profit Resources.

Periodically, United Way solicits community input on current health and human service needs. Additionally hundreds of service providers, interested citizens, other funding entities, and United Way volunteers provide insight. The community goals are developed from the information gathered at these meetings, a review of current activities and other research. This volunteer-directed research is used to determine the health and human services priorities where United Way funds will be invested.

Local businesses and individuals have designated donations to be used for United Way of Utah County’s administrative expenses. These corporate gifts cover United Way of Utah County’s low overhead of 14.7 percent (which includes 8.6 percent for resource development expenses and 6.1 percent for management and general expenses) and allow 100 percent of the donor’s contribution to create lasting change in the community.

The United Way of Western Orleans County works closely with service providers, governments and other funders to identify health and human service problems in our communities and develops plans to address them. United Way of Western Orleans County also assists nonprofit agencies in recruiting and training volunteers and provides volunteer resources in the area of management and technical assistance, training and board leadership.

United Way of Greater Cleveland is a local, independent nonprofit organization and the largest private-sector funder of health and human services in our community. United Way raises and allocates funds and builds partnerships to advance community-wide priorities and support the health and human service programs of more than 130 agencies throughout Cuyahoga and Geauga Counties.

The United Way of Western Orleans County (United Way of Western Orleans County) is a local, nonprofit organization that has been supporting health and human service programs in our community since 1963. This support is provided with funds raised through an annual community-wide fund-raising campaign that responds to an annual volunteer-driven assessment of problems our community faces. The United Way of Western Orleans County is governed by a local volunteer board of directors.

United Way of Southeastern Idaho is fortunate to have hundreds of volunteers who give unselfishly of their time and talent to this community-wide fundraising effort. Many generous local businesses donate goods and services to United Way of Southeastern Idaho.

In the business of community impact, United Way of Tulare County incurs costs for fundraising, marketing, year-round support of our fundraising and agency partners, community investment and common business operations such as accounting, human resources and overall organizational management. Our volunteers. Community needs drive the campaign. Before a campaign goal is set, nearly 100 volunteers research specific needs and requests from our agencies. Even in good economic times, need in the Orleans County Area continues to grow. In fact, our agencies could very efficiently and effectively spend much more than is allocated to them by the United Way.

Community volunteers from all walks of life actually run the United Way of Western Orleans County. Their roles vary. The 21 members of the board of directors establish and monitor policy. Nearly 200 marketing volunteers orchestrate advertising, marketing, public relations and special events. Nearly 100 fund distribution volunteers visit agencies and review their programs and budgets before making funding recommendations. About 500 campaign volunteers raise the money.

United Way of the Lower Mainland's fundraising costs are 11 cents for each dollar raised. We are proud to have one of the lowest net fundraising costs in the country. United Way's Endowment Fund, established in 1943 by a small group of generous donors, helps offset already low fundraising costs to ensure that 89 cents of every dollar donated is used to support programs in our community.

The United Way of the Capital Area is a non-profit organization that has been raising resources to meet the critical human service needs of Greater Hartford since 1924. It is one of more than 1,400 independent and autonomous United Ways in the United States.

Capital Area United Way is a local charity that strives to improve the lives of people in the tri-county area. Through the Community Improvement Fund, donor investors provide assistance to more than one charity. The Community Improvement Fund is the collective power of people working toward long-term solutions not just short-term fixes. The Fond du Lac Area United Way has chosen to be a member because of the services it receives from the United Way of America. Our dues payment is three quarters of one percent total campaign revenue. Those dollars come back to us each year two and three fold in the form of income from national companies solicited on our behalf by the United Way of America (UWA). UWA provides technical support for local United Way staff, as well as national promotion via advertising during NFL football games.

UWGMC is a community partner and problem-solver. It is a force for change in the community. No other local organization can leverage business, government, and community resources and leaders like UWGMC. UWGMC uses local volunteers to assess and to prioritize the most critical local needs and funds only those organizations proven to get the job done most efficiently and effectively.

United Way's Board of Directors made the decision to continue to fund the Boy Scouts of America, Greater Cleveland Chapter, a partner agency, at its September 2001 Board Meeting. The United Way allocation is being made to the Scouts' Learning for Life program. The Boy Scouts requested this change and United Way agreed. The career development program, taught by public school teachers in participating public schools, provides non-discriminatory access to all.

Community partners will continue to have non-voting representation on the Community Investment Committees that make annual United Way funding decisions. Agencies have expressed concerns that this process may result in loss of funding, jobs, and service to clients.

With its ties to the social service community United Way is aware of the emerging needs of the city and the county. Over 20 Citizen Review volunteers, representing a wide range of expertise, work together to compile a comprehensive assessment of our community's human care strengths and weaknesses. They research statistical data, conduct interviews, interpret reports and analyze trends to determine the greatest needs in our community.

We maintain high standards and are scrutinized each year by an independent auditor, who ensures that our fundraising procedures remain the most efficient and cost-effective. State and federal taxes do support some health and human services, primarily through public assistance programs. But taxes cannot provide for all. United Way's target specific strategies aimed at increasing the economic self-sufficiency of families and individuals in our community.
