Many of our butcher blocks feature a food-safe natural oil finish that seals and protects the wood and provides an ideal cutting surface. Natural oil is the finish to choose if you intend to cut upon your butcher block directly. For natural oil finish butcher blocks, it is recommended that you re-oil the surface every 4 weeks or so using a pure white mineral oil that you can purchase at a regular grocery store or hardware store.

Varnique semi-gloss finished butcher blocks clean up easily with mild soap and warm water. Varnique is impervious to most household chemicals, though it is wise to avoid the use of harsh chemicals or harsh detergents that may damage the finish. Varnique, though less permeable to water than natural oil, is not impermeable; therefore, it is wise to clean up liquid spills on your butcher block counter as soon as they appear.

The Satin finish is a matte finish and the easiest to maintain. Because it has a low sheen, it is very forgiving insofar as showing scratches, dents, and wear and tear over time. The Semi Gloss finish has some shine and is a little harder to maintain in that it will show scratches, dents and wear and tear sooner. The High Gloss finish is the hardest to maintain in that it shows everything - dust, dirt, scratches, dents, and wear and tear in general the quickest.

All motor oils contain a base oil and additives. The 100% synthetic motor oils have a synthetic base oil. Semi-synthetic oils contain a mixture of base stocks, which can be a hydro-treated base oil (Group-II or Group-III) with a mixture of mineral oil (Group-I) or mineral oil with PAO (Group-IV). Thus, do not assume that a semi-synthetic motor oil contains a high percentage of synthetic base stocks.

Because we believe wood should neither look nor feel like plastic. To our ears it feels, looks & sounds better to have a minimal hand-rubbed type of finish as opposed to a thick lamination of shiny clear. We DO offer some variation in stains, but I'm afraid if you want one in metalflake purple or with a mural of a busty mermaid crawling out of a skull next to a shipwreck, you'll have to make your own arrangements there, my headbanging friend.

Bird feathers are naturally waterproof but after washing, each feather must be aligned properly so that water cannot seep through the microscopic barbes and barbules that are part of the vane of each feather. Each feather is made up of microscopic barbs and barbules that hook together like "Velcro". Once hooked together, they become a tight waterproof barrier. Each properly aligned feather overlaps another like shingles on a roof creating a temperature controlled barrier.
