Yes. An investigator who is the PI on an R21 or other significant but allowable research grant is eligible to apply if he/she meets all of the other eligibility criteria. However, recipients of an R21/R33 Phased Innovation Award, which combines the review of the R21 and R33 phases of the award, are not considered "new investigators" and are not eligible to apply.

The Modular application and award process is not a new grant program. Instead, it is a revised application and award process for R01 and other kinds of awards that do not exceed $250,000 direct costs per year.

Applicants must have received their Ph.D. no more than five years before assuming the Fellowship. The Crown grant number provides the best information. This is a two part number which we can trace to our official records. We can also trace a legal description back to the original grant and make a copy for you. Other information such as the date of a grant, the statute under which it was issued, the specific rights conveyed, or the location could be useful if you lack the grant number and legal description.
