In the first semester of their first year, all entering students, except transfer students and those enrolled in University College, are automatically registered in writing courses based on their performance on the SATs and the Rutgers University Placement Test: Level 1 exam. University College students and transfer students receive instructions from their colleges about the results of their placement tests and how to register for a course at the appropriate level.

We recommend your staff use both programs. The Electronic Writing Course teaches staff how to write clearly; StyleWriter puts theory into practice. In one organization they tested both programs. Those who used only the Electronic Writing Course only improved their writing style (as measured by StyleWriter’s Style Index) by 10 percent. However, those using StyleWriter after working through the Electronic Writing Course saw their writing style improve by 50 to 90 percent.

If you want to drop a Writing Program class, you need to meet with the Academic Dean of your college. If your Dean grants your request to drop the course, she/he will contact the Writing Program to obtain a special permission number. Once you receive this special permission number, you must go to the Registrar or use the phone system during your designated days.

In the end, you may achieve the same goals. But a writing course can greatly speed up the process, both in terms of your writing strength, and in knowing about the writing business. On a course you can accomplish in a year what might take you many years by yourself. This course also gives you a rich and supportive writing environment, the chance to extend your range as a writer, and many creative opportunities to present your work.

No. Because the summer distance education writing and language arts courses are intensive versions of our fall and spring courses, students will have approximately 1-1/2 to 2 hours of coursework each week day.

According to the Campus Committee on Student Writing, a Writing Intensive course is a course in which the instructor assigns at least thirty pages of writing. Not all of this writing needs to receive a grade or commentary, and some of it may take the form of journal entries, in-class responses to questions, position statements, answers on essay examinations, etc. The program is based on the premise that students learn more about a subject by writing about it.

Writing Intensive courses may be offered by both full-time and adjunct faculty members, as long as they have taken the WAC training workshop.

The writing exam requirement will no longer be required for students graduating in August 2007 or later. Students who are currently enrolled in the writing exam for summer and beyond will be dropped from the course and will receive notification from the system that they have been dropped. This will also activate any necessary refunds.

Yes. Although the Level I is designed to be taken in sequence, if your comfort level is fine and you are confident in your ability to understand the materials, you can begin a course after it has started. It is suggested that you pay in full for the course that way you will receive the course manuals from the sessions you missed. Once you have paid in full, you may take the missed session the following year.

Most of our online courses start at the beginning of a semester and finish by the end of that semester. You register for an online course the same way you register for a traditional course: phone, online, or in person. Be sure that you use the correct section number for the online course. You may contact the registrar if you have questions.

After you had successfully completed your online registration, you will first receive an e-mail confirming your registration. Then you will receive a second e-mail with the link/s to the online course/s that you signed up for. Both e-mails are sent automatically and instantaneously after you have successfully completed your online registration. You must open the second email within twenty-four hours of receiving it, open the link/s and Bookmark or save to Favorites the course link/s.

Beginning autumn quarter 2005, secondary meetings (e.g., lab (LB) and quiz (QZ) sections) have their own SLN and are listed immediately below the primary lecture section in the Time Schedule.
