Common problems with supplied files from amateur or part-time designers, typically involve file and font incompatibilities, missing bleed and crop/fold/perf marks and poor color matching, (due to improper monitor calibration and a general lack of understanding of the CMYK process) which means the final output can vary DRAMATICALLY from what you see on your monitor. And Apple's older external floppy drives for 400K, 800K and 1.4Mb are intended for use ONLY with Apple Macs which already have an INTERNAL floppy drive. Period. Mac 400K and 800K diskettes are written in a unique fashion, no standard IBM-type floppy disk controller card in a PC can read them.

Verify that the speakers are plugged into the line “out” or “spkr” port of the sound card. Verify the transformer for the speaker is plugged into an electrical outlet on one end and into the speakers on the other end. Check the mixer settings. Is mute selected or are the volume settings too low? Increase the master volume setting. If the sound card has a “diagnose” file on the installation disk, use this diagnose utility to check the sound card.

If possible ask the person sending you the disk to format it as a PC disk on their Mac. The Mac OS has this capability built in. Otherwise there are conversion utilities for the PC that let you read a Mac disk and transfer files to and from it. TransMac is just one and has a shareware version which will open 1.4mb floppies (the full version will open Mac zip disks, CDs and just about any media).
