Are you currently running additional "modem occupying" software? Software such as this grabs your modem and won't let go (i.e. PC Anywhere). Please shut down those programs. A hub and switch are two devices that split the bandwidth coming from any ethernet device that is connected to them they will not route communications from your LAN to the internet.
