Yes, there is an MD/MPH program at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Students interested in both degree programs generally take a leave of absence after the 2nd or 3rd year of medical school to complete the MPH. If a student is not invited to participate in the BSN/MSN Dual Degree program at the point of admission, he/she can qualify at the end of the winter term of their freshman year. The academic advisor will track the grades for all students taking their prerequisite course in the fall and winter terms. Students who maintain above a 3.25 GPA who were not initially invited to participate in the program, will be asked if they want to take advantage of this program.

In light of the fact that J.D./M.B.A. dual degree program applicants will not be notified of admission decisions until after the Spring Competition concludes, applicants to the dual degree program will be permitted to participate in the Competition that is held for transfer students during the first week of the Fall Semester.

Application for the combined degree programs is submitted only after acceptance into the medical school program. A limited number of combined loan and scholarship awards are given to first year students based on need and merit. The awards are renewable annually for each of the three succeeding years of medical school if academic performance is satisfactory.

Students successfully completing the program earn two degrees: Associate and Bachelor, Bachelor and Masters, or Masters and Masters (depending on which degrees you pursue and what options the school offers). With the Dual Degree Program one year of school and its financial costs are saved, also having two degrees will give you an edge in the interview process when applying for employment over other candidates.

The dual degree program is a combination of an M.B.A. and an M.S. or M.Eng. program. Taken separately, the two degrees consist of 90 credit hours. However, if done in a "dual" format, both may be obtained in 72 credit hours. The OHSU MD/MPH program is in epidemiology and biostatistics. Other public health specialty tracks such as public health administration are not available within the joint MD/MPH program. If you are interested in any other specialty track at another school, you need to apply separately to that program and you will not be in a joint MD/MPH program. Rather, you will be enrolled in two separate programs at the same time.

If you wish to earn undergraduate credits, you can do this by enrolling as a Nonmatriculated (NM) student. If you wish to earn graduate credits, you must be granted Graduate Nonmatriculated (GNM) status by an academic unit and the Graduate Admissions office prior to registration. A student who is later admitted to a graduate program at the University of Washington may apply a maximum of 12 applicable GNM credits (or any combination of GNM and up to six approved transfer credits totaling 12 credits) towards a master's degree. Transfer credits are not applicable towards a doctoral degree. Six- and ten-year limits for master's and doctoral degrees commence at the point of enrollment in the first GNM course which is later applied for credit toward degree requirements.

In order for students participating in the dual degree program to complete the undergraduate portion of the degee in four years, it was necessary to remove two co-ops from the curriculum. In the second year of study, students will do their level II co-op in which the focus is acute, adult-patient care.

The two degrees have been jointly designed by SUNY at Buffalo and Amrita University and will be offered as a single stream of courses over a period of 18 months. The two degrees have overlapping course requirements that have been effectively used to extract the synergies between their respective requirements and leverage the competencies of the faculty from the two universities.

What about cross-listed courses? I took a class that I thought fulfilled the requirement, but I took it under a different department heading.

The MPH program is geared toward professionals who hold a doctorate degree in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, law, or other fields related to public health, or a master’s degree in nursing or social work. HOWEVER, the School of Public Health does offer some 80-credit Master of Science (2-year) and some Doctor of Science degree programs for those with a prior bachelor’s degree only. We expect most students will take three years to complete the program. However, students who attend both residential sessions and complete two courses per quarter can complete the program in two years and three summers. This would require considerable discipline and commitment and is generally not recommended. See the next question for the maximum time.

Once we receive your application, we will arrange for a short interview/orientation session. After completing a successful interview, we will send out an official acceptance letter. However, our programs are not competitive and are on a first come first serve basis.

Not necessarily, the decision for acceptance to the MD program is made independently of the MD/PhD decision.

A Chiropractic Physician (DC), receives much the same basic education as a Medical Doctor (MD) and Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), All three professions are trained in primary care diagnosis. However the focus of the MD is the utilization of drugs and surgery (hence the title of “Medical” Doctor), the chiropractor is trained on manual medicine (treatment by hand) and therapy, while the DO focuses on Medicine and Drugs with trends towards conservative care.
