Most animals gain access through pre-existing holes in rotten wood or loose panels. An animal usually opts to take up residence in your attic or garage because it wants a dark, quiet, warm place where it can be undisturbed. Fortunately, it is relatively easy to convince the animal to relocate. If it is winter, we recommend leaving the animal alone until the season warms; it may have a hard time finding a new home.

Make the site unattractive to Mother Squirrel by using several of these tips: Leave lights on; Place a portable radio nearby set to a rock station, turning the volume on high; Knot up some rags or old socks, sprinkle them generously with ammonia and place them around the area. Without damaging the nest, gently move it 3-5" with a broom, so the mother knows it's been disturbed. Squirrels usually have an alternative nest site to which they can move their babies.

Finishing off an existing attic, basement, or garage may seem like a great way to create more living space, but it is important to do some 'homework' first. Check on the zoning and building requirments early in the process. You will save a lot of time and money knowing about County building standards in advance. Existing conditions could make it expensive, difficult, or even impossible for you to change your attic, basement, or garage into living space.

I would suggest a live cage trap. If you can determine what type of animal you have this will make it easier to know what size trap to purchase. The trap does need to be placed on a flat surface in an area that the animal would come into contact with it. If you spray the trap with apple juice this will make it more attractive to the animal. If you think that you might have a critter in the attic, the best thing to do is try to identify what the animal might be and how it has entered your home. If you can find the entrance, the best thing to do is wait for the animal to leave and block off the hole. In North Carolina, chances are excellent that the snake involved is a rat snake. (Rat snake shed pictured at right) This species is an excellent climber and is responsible for most of the “snake-in-house” calls the Museum of Natural Sciences receives. If you need to verify the identification, collect as much of the shed as possible, put it in a protective container and send it to a science center or natural history museum for identification.

Most building codes do not allow for your clother dryer vent to terminate any where other that the exterior of the structure. Vent termination in an attic or garage is not acceptable and should be corrected as soon as possible.

The best thing you can do for any wild animal is leave it where you find it.

It is an offence to release into the wild a bird or animal that is of a kind not normally resident in Great Britain, unless you obtain a licence to do so. This ban extends to many foreign animals that have become established here, such as the grey squirrel, and also to some native species, such as the barn owl. It is also an offence to sell or release to the wild a short list of highly invasive plants.

Capturing a wild animal and releasing it in another area is prohibited by Massachusetts law. Rabies in raccoons is spreading throughout the eastern United States. Seeing a wild animal, such as raccoon, opossum, deer, etc. is not a problem in itself. Animals commonly frequent residential areas, but are usually secretive and go unnoticed. If left alone, these animals do not present a hazard to the public. Keeping your areas clean of garbage, refuse, and other food attractants will limit animals from invading your property.

In most cases, a wild bird or animal in a basement will be able to leave on its own if it is given a means of exit. This is best done by opening the basement windows and turning off the lights in the basement. If there is a doorway to the outside at the top of the basement stairs, this should also be opened. The animal should recognize the open doors or windows as exits and leave within an hour or two.
