A handy person may be able to lay field tile without much trouble, but installing underlayment, battens, flashings for valleys, chimneys, solar panels and skylights and cutting the tiles along hips and valleys are more complicated tasks. Yes, although slurry coated tiles are not recommended in areas that have more than 30 freeze/thaw cycles per year (it is suggested that potential customers consult with their local building dept. for information on freeze/thaw cycles). Roofers must follow recommendations for installing tile for the weather conditions in a given area.

Answer. The tiles are not 100% waterproof, the underlayment (felt) is what keeps the roof in a water tight condition. With the home settling, ground movement and heavy wind, the tile can shift and slip down exposing the underpayment to the sun and the weather. Then the tile running up the side of the home can loosen and fall.

The minimum slope is 3:12 (17*). At less than a 3:12 slope, the roof tile is decorative only and must be installed over a sealed roof deck with provisions for drainage under the tile.

Yes, but be careful. Any sloped surface can be dangerous to walk on and may be slippery.
