First, check your computer for a sound card. If you do not have one installed, you will not be able to use the audio feature of the program. If you are not sure if you have a sound card, your technolgy support group should be able to assist you. If you are sure you have a sound card, check to make sure your speakers are on and that the volume is up loud enough to hear. Alternatively, if you are using headphones, make sure that they are plugged in all the way into the correct place.

Audio requires a few things: Once you are sure you have a sound card or audio player as part of your computer software, make sure your "browser" *preferences* are set to hear a variety of audio formats. *Preferences* for your browser can be found in the tool bar at the top of your browser when opened. (e.g., On my Netscape browser, preferences are found under "EDIT".) The audio found on my site is in different formats: MWP, streaming, au, Realaudio, wav and midi.

Chances are you do not have the media software required to hear/view the files. The media clips on this site require the latest versions of RealPlayer, Quicktime, and Windows Media. The QuickTime plug-in is used to play most of the audio in the course. If you cannot hear audio in an activity, you may be able to resolve the issue by changing a certain QuickTime setting. The Longman courses use globally accepted installation software called "Install Anywhere." There are no known issues at this time preventing the custom built installer from functioning properly.

Adequate Bandwidth for streaming both Video and Audio, may not be available through your internet connection. Window Media players often drop the Video frames and play just the Audio in cases where bandwidth is not enough for transmitting both Audio and Video.

Some files on the site (except for our interviews) are in .Real Audio format and should run on any standard browser. I know for fact they work in Explorer 5 and later (on Mac and Windows), Netscape 4.0 and later (Mac and PC). WebTV and set top browser systems may have a problem playing them. I used to have everything as WAV files, which played on anything, but those files were big and it simply got too expensive so I made the switch in May of 2003.

Your company may have a 'firewall' to stop external data interfering with its own. You need to contact your IT department to find out.

Most likely you do not have your web browser (netscape) set up to hear .wav sound files. The following will explain how to do this. There are some rare occasions where the contents of your Picture Cache directory have become corrupted and will keep Cakewalk from displaying clip contents. To correct this problem, delete all of the *.WOV files in your Picture Cache directory. Last, try this: Locate the file AUD.INI in the Cakewalk directory, double click it, and take a look at the line PictureDir=.
