To be able to use type 1 Fonts under Windows 9x,Me,NT you need the free ATM Light. If the ATM Light is installed, then you can preview, activate or print type 1 fonts without having to install these. TrueType and type 1 Fonts have the same quality. Windows NT converts type 1 Fonts into the TrueType format, if you install these at the system control.

Type 1 fonts are the most reliable font to use in printing. They have a screen and printer version (.pfb and .pfm extensions for PC) -- both must be included when you submit your fonts to us. Developed by Adobe, Type 1 fonts are easier for imagesetters to read. True Type fonts, developed by Apple and Microsoft, are contained within one file -- a .ttf extension (i.e., webdings.ttf). Some True Type fonts do not provide complete character sets and can be unreliable with imagesetters.

If your document contains a 2-byte Type 1 font that is resident on the printer, QuarkXPress will access the font on the printer when printing. Any glyphs will print at the resolution determined by the printer. To be resident on the printer, a font must either be in the printer's ROM or on a hard drive directly attached to the printer. If a Type 1 font in your document is not resident on the printer, QuarkXPress will send a screen image of the glyphs to the printer.

In version 2.0, the software module that performs the printing and print preview SHOULD display the sample text in the correct font, as it does in the sample text display area. Certain picture fonts do not display correctly in the print functions. You may try to change the printer since it does have a bearing on the display portion of the print functions. Each time a font file (with a .pfb extension) is listed in the FormInfo file, the size of that file will be added to the final output PDF file. If a font file is 60k in size, 60k will be added to the final size of the document. If the same font file is listed ten times, 600k will be added to the final size. Keep this in mind if you need to keep file size small.

The procedures and tools vary, depending upon the machine.
