We do not admit students for the MA degree only, though the MA degree is awarded on the way to completion of coursework towards the Ph.D. Students who already have an MA in African American Studies, Africana Studies are prohibited by the Graduate Division from receiving a second degree from the Department.

No. Students in our program may elect to receive a Master's degree once they complete coursework and comprehensive exams and enter Ph.D. candidacy, but we only admit students who intend to complete the Ph.D. degree.

The GI Bill will pay benefits for two semesters as a non-admit student. After two semesters, benefits will stop until you are formally admitted. Courses taken while a non-admit student should be limited to classes that would be acceptable to any program on campus (i.e. core requirements). Have your semester enrollment form signed by an academic advisor in the University College advising office.

M.F.A. degree is a terminal degree, meaning it is the highest degree achievable within a field of study. At SUU, classroom study and practical, hands-on experience are combined. Graduates are also able to teach at an institution of higher education with an M.F.A. An M.A., on the other hand, is often considered an academic step toward earning a doctorate. Graduate school differs from undergraduate study.

The requirements for a Master of Arts in history are the satisfactory completion of 30 units, usually ten separate courses. A student is required to take a minimum of four 600-level courses (12 units). A student may take a maximum of four 500-level courses (12 units).

Graduates can get an ESL job teaching adults in intensive (pre-college/university) programs, community colleges, 4-year colleges and universities, and workplace programs in the U.S. and abroad. You are considered a Woodrow Wilson Fellow only as long as you are an undergraduate. Once you become a full-time graduate student, you will no longer be considered a Woodrow Wilson Undergraduate Research Fellow, and therefore any funds unspent will be returned to the Program for a future Fellow's funding. Typically, in most BA/MA programs, the first year you enter the program is your fourth year as an undergraduate. You would still be an active member of the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship Program.

Yes, NYU will accept the M.A. or equivalent degree from an accredited university in the US or abroad. Final decisions on degree acceptance are made by the Graduate Admissions Office. However, the department may require some students entering the program with the M.A. to take additional courses as necessary to fill gaps in their background. No more than 32 points of transfer credit from other institutions may be applied to the Ph.D. course requirements.

Students who meet the pre- and co-requisites and complete the approved program of studies in Early Education, Elementary, Secondary, or Multiple Disabilities specializations are eligible for provisional licensure or a letter of eligibility for certification in the District of Columbia.

The length of time depends on whether you attend full-time or part-time. Most students complete the program in two years, though part-time students might need more time. The program duration also depends on how well the course sequence is planned. Most courses are not offered every semester, but on a yearly basis. Every student should ask the Assistant Advisor for help in planning the program of study.

Yes. Many students in our doctoral program enter with M.A.'s from other institutions, but regardless of whether or not they have M.A.'s they all begin as first-year doctoral students. There may be some courses from other institutions that those with M.A.'s can count toward their Minor requirements and they certainly bring the advantage of having previous experience in graduate level study. The Master's degree in Political Science is earned en route to the Ph.D.

It depends on the student’s other time commitments. The degree requires 36 hours of work, which translates into 11 3-credit courses and a final project or 10 3-credit courses and a thesis. Students who can devote most of their work life to the degree can be done in two academic years.
