In recent times after you have completed a 'Windows Update, the option to 'Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus' is automatically activated. To fix this problem, do the following:- Untick the box in the 'Virus Protection' section which says 'Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus', then click Apply, then OK.

For extra security, Outlook Express contains a feature that blocks all file types that have the potential of containing a virus. It does not scan the attachments, it just blocks them. If you have an up-to-date virus scanner, it is safe to turn this feature off. Here is how: Can anyone else get to the site? If not, this is usually because the domain name has expired or the account has been suspended due to non-payment. Please contact the billing department to verify.

When attempting to read email with an accompanying file attachment using Outlook Express 6.x you may receive the message 'OE removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your mail'. This message is the result of a new security feature built into Outlook Express 6.x which prohibits the ability to open file attachments. To enable Outlook Express 6.

Normally this is fairly simple. When a message shows up in your inbox with a paperclip icon next to it, this means there is an attached file. Note that you should only open or save attachments that you're expecting from trusted sources. Unknown and unexpected attachments, even that appear to be sent from people you know, can be viruses and may damage your computer.

Enable Compatibility Mode to perform Spelling, Thesaurus Lookups and Definitions Dictionary Lookups in a much more seamless manner.

Outlook Express has a Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus option at Tools | Options | Security . If this option is enabled, Outlook Express will disallow you to access any attachment that may potentially be a virus, for example, a file with an .exe or .scr extension. You can just turn off this option to access your attachments.

Save messages as .eml files. Open Outlook Express and then drag and drop the .eml files back into the Outlook Express inbox.

Generally, the Outlook email client will preview attached photo/html files. To minimise the chances of opening a virus file, you are advised to disable the preview function in MS Outlook or Outlook Express. Some viruses are embedded in MSWord, MS Excel or MS Powerpoint files. They are called macro virus. You can do the following setting to prevent a macro from executing automatically:

Make a note of what you currently have in the "incoming mail server" entry (the name of your POP3 server). Change the "incoming mail server" from the name of your POP3 server to "localhost" (no quotes). Open the SpamBayes configuration page at http://localhost:8880/config (you can do this via the tray application, or just type that address into your browser). Enter your POP3 server's name in the top box ("Remote Servers").

On any Windows 9x or higher build operating system running Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher, a simple configuration setting in Internet Options will enable Internet Explorer or Outlook Express to automatically dial the default Internet connection. Start by clicking on My Computer/Control Panel/Internet Options/Connections tab. Select the radio button option 'Always dial my default connection.' Single click the dial-up networking connection for The River, and click the Set Default button.

The address book is incompatible because the field names are different. You will have to export your address book to an excel file, change the field names, and then import it into Outlook 2001. The step-by-step process is below. It took me a couple of tries, so I included my tips in the instructions below. Save as "Text (tab Delimited)," which will probably be the default choice.

Answer: From Outlook's menu bar select File → Import and Export... The action to choose is "Import Internet Mail and Addresses." Click the Next button. Select Outlook Express as the mail application and click the Next button. Elect to "Replace duplicates with items imported" and click the Finish button. Outlook will provide a summary report when it is finished.

Outlook Express removes suspicious attachment files by default to avoid opening a virus. The problem is due to the default setting on some mail clients that support authentication on the outgoing (SMTP) mail server.

Outlook Express has a security setting that prevents you from viewing most attachments. To turn it off, open Outlook Express, click on "tools" and then "options." Next select the security tab and uncheck the box that says, "Do not allow attachments ..."

In the Virus Protection section UNTICK “Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus”. ( N.B. It highly recommended that you reset this setting IMMEDIATELY after saving the attachment )

Users getting an error message regarding the removal of an unsafe attachment, and who want to receive emails with these attachments in the future, should: Under the "Security" or "Connection" tab, find the checkbox that reads "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus".

The Block images and other external content in HTML e-mail check box is selected, this option manages your e-mail by: Reducing the number of junk e-mail messages that you receive. Images in emails often include information that notify the sender that you have read the message. This validates your email address and often causes you to receive more junk email. In Service Pack 2, these images are replaced by a red X. You can click the InfoBar to the content if you wish.

If you are doing it for the first time, select My E-mail Messages from the task list, click the Wizard button on the toolbar and select Burn onto DVD or CD in Backup Wizard, click Next to Finish. Then, click the Backup button to perform the backup. Only the last step is required to perform the same backup again, or you may use the scheduler to perform backup automatically.

Repair all these dbx files or mbx files with the "Batch Repair" function in Advanced Outlook Express Repair(AOER). AOER will output the recovered messages in a corresponding "xxxx_recovered" directory for each repaired dbx file called 'xxxx'. Please just use the demo version to repair your file normally in the "Repair" page.

Illegal operations in Microsoft Mail Programs generally occur when one of the mailboxes (usually the inbox or the outbox) become corrupt. If this error message occurs immediately after entering the mail program the problem is probably your inbox. If the problem occurs immediately after doing a send and receive the problem is probably your outbox. To fix your Inbox go ahead with the following instructions, to fix your outbox simply replace any instance of inbox with outbox.

Additional security options were recently added to Microsoft Outlook. If you can't view your inbound fax PDF or TIFF attachments, you may need to change a setting in the Outlook Security tab. From within Outlook, click on "Tools" and "Options". Notice the checkbox for "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus." This box is checked by default and will result in some file types being blocked. Uncheck this selection; then close and restart Outlook.

Update Outlook Express(OE) to the latest version from Windowsupdate.com. Use anti-virus software such as Norton Anti-virus to scan email. Personally, I never use the email scanning that NAV provides, because I use the latest OE and the following measures: Disable the Preview Pane when downloading messages from your ISP. A quick way to do this is to add a button to the toolbar.

There is no option in Outlook Express that allows this. However, Dominik Jain has come up with a solution. Not only does it position the cursor and colour the different levels of quoting, it converts emoticons such as :) to real images. Check out the website and download OE-Quotefix here.

The Internet Connection Wizard makes short work of setting up your email box by walking you through each step for every e-mail account you set up. Start Outlook Express, and on the Tools menu, click Accounts. If the Internet Connection Wizard starts up automatically, skip ahead to step 4. On the 'Your Name' page of the wizard, type your name as you want it to appear to everyone who gets e-mail from you, and then click Next.

You can protect access to Outlook Express by restricting access to its executable file, msimn.exe, which is usually located in the C:\Program Files\Outlook Express folder. You can also protect individual folders used by Outlook Express by restricting access to the appropriate message files, located in the Store Folder of Outlook Express.
