When DVDs where first introduced this meant that DVDs purchased in one region would only play on equipment purchased from the same region. Related QuestionsWhy do you call it "tile coding" instead of the conventional name, "CMACs"?
RL FAQThe idea of tile coding is essentially the same as that underlying CMACs. Without in any way intending to detract from the credit due the pioneers of CMACs (e.g, Albus, Marr, Miller...), sometimes it is better to switch to a new name. The name CMAC stands for, among other things, "Cerebellar Model Articulatory Controller," which seems pretty inappropriate for the current usage. The original CMAC also used a slightly different algorithm -- a correlation rule rather than an error correction rule.

Related QuestionsWhy has all the coding been moved out of main?
NASA GISS: GISS GCM ModelE: FAQIn order to increase the modularity of the code, many tasks that were previously in main and input (input/output, initialisations, diagnostics etc.) have been moved to the relevant physical module. Thus, main should not vary as much between model versions. Also, changes to a module (to the number of prognostic variables, the functionality etc.) should now only concern that module and not the rest of the model. This should make it easier to 'plug and play' new functionality.

It is normally only used in Lisp implementations that run on processors that are specialized for Lisp, as it is difficult to implement efficiently in software. In normal list structure, each element of the list is represented as a CONS cell, which is basically two pointers (the CAR and CDR); the CAR points to the element of the list, while the CDR points to the next CONS cell in the list or NIL.
