Yes, NVIDIA and ATI provide drivers that work on AMD64. You can install them by executing emerge nvidia-kernel or emerge ati-drivers. If you have more questions about these drivers, you should read the Nvidia guide or the ATI FAQ.

The ATI binary drivers are at present the only drivers which support 3D acceleration on cards based on the R3xx and R4xx chipsets. This includes recent cards such as the 9500, 9600, 9700, and 9800 series, plus the high end mobility chipsets and X-series cards. effort to develop an opensource driver for the high end Radeon chipsets is underway here. If you want to try this driver, be aware that it is still under development and that you may encounter serious problems.

There are currently three nVidia module packages in the stable APT repository. Which one to use depends on the model of your video card: The first is the newest nvidia module (version 1.0.9755), which works on newer hardware but is not backward compatible. The other two are the legacy modules which work with "older" hardware. If you're unsure which legacy driver to use, there's a list of card model numbers which relate to each driver package at http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_32667.

The nVidia drivers have become a lot easier to install over the years. In a few short steps you can be up and running. Add the line Load "v4l")(Find a line that starts with Driver. Next to it is the name of your current video driver surrounded by two quotes. Change the name of the driver to nvidia. So the line should read Driver "nvidia")

fglrx requires 64bit GCC 3.3 C++ libraries to build (cxxlibs-6.0.3-x86_64-1) and the 32 bit c/ compatibility packages. Install those libraries, and then get fglrx64 (not fglrx) from ATi's website. You may also need the 32bit compatibility packages in Slamd64, and the driver may require further patching if you want to use it on the latest kernel.

A lot of sites carry the latest beta drivers. Two examples are 3D Chipset and The Ctrl-Alt-Delete. Remember that there is a difference between the latest drivers (beta versions) and the latest official drivers.

Nvidia provides drivers for Linux (binary only). Are these drivers compatible with Xbox Linux? The Xbox is basically a Intel PC and Nvidia provides the graphics card. These drivers are for Intel X86 processors with Nvidia video cards running Linux. If this is compatible, it should solve the 3D acceleration issue with Xbox Linux. Unfortunately not.

First, you need to get the XFree86 3.3.5 Mach64 server if you don't already have it. It should automatically detect the ATI chips available up to the time of its release (July 1999), except for all Rage128 cards (like the Fury). See below for Rage128 support. One exception from this is the Rage Pro LT chipset, as the server doesn't support the LCD with that chipset. A fix for this problem is known and will be included in XFree86-3.3.5.

gtk+2.0 triggers a bug in the hardware accelerated render code in the proprietary driver. Nvidia is aware of the problem and is supposedly working on a fix.

The MS Windows 2000 release CD include drivers for RAGE 128, RAGE XL, RAGE XC, RAGE PRO, RAGE LT PRO, RAGE IIC, RAGE II+, RAGE II, and mach 64/VT. This means that any board product using those chips will be supported for the following features: Drivers for RAGE 128 PRO™ boards are not included on the Windows? 2000 release CD.

Windows 2000 drivers will not be made available for legacy or discontinued products. This includes 3D PRO Turbo PC2TV, 3D XPRESSION+ PC2TV, 3D XPRESSION+ -, original All-in-Wonder, ATI-TV, Video Basic, Video-It! and ATI Modems. ATI does have a trade up program for specific legacy products. Please check driver availability for the product you are interested in before upgrading.

Products based on ATI's Mobility™ product line, including RAGE Mobility P™, RAGE Mobility M™ and RAGE LT PRO™, are supported by a generic graphics driver included on the Windows? 2000 release CD. The basic driver on the Windows? 2000 CD may not offer some of the custom features provided by the manufacturer of your laptop. Some examples are OpenGL or custom control panels.

If you are using any of the 2.6.11 kernels, you will need to patch the driver before following section 3 with two patches available from here (www.rage3d.com). Also, if you are building your own kernel (more important for 2.6.11), remove the DRM (Direct Rendering Manager) section - if it is built in, you will get complaints about "Operation not permitted" and other obscure error messages about DRM from 'dmesg | egrep "fglrx"'

At this time, the drivers available on NVIDIA.com do not support notebook GPUs. Many NVIDIA notebook GPUs have Windows Vista drivers already built into the operating system and install the first time you run Windows Vista. Notebook GPU driver support is provided directly from the manufacturer, so please consult your manufacturer for an updated NVIDIA notebook GPU driver.

Since nearly all compiled C programs depend on the glibc library attempting to install a new glibc on top of a previously installed glibc could fail. If you are not using /usr/local/lib for anything then start by cp -a /lib /usr/local. Make certain that /usr/local/lib is in /etc/ld.so.conf and then ldconfig. If the build fails and programs stop working then run ldconfig and try casting glibc again.

Most of the problems associated with the NVIDIA drivers can be attributed to an improper install. Unfortunately, most distributions are not following the Linux OpenGL ABI very well (if at all). This makes it virtually impossible for 3rd party vendors to provide easy-to-install drivers. First, carefully read the NVIDIA Linux FAQ, then verify the following: Do a 'locate libGL.so'. Verify that every libGL.so* on your system is the NVIDIA lib (in /usr/lib) or a symbolic link to the NVIDIA lib.

Standard NT drivers will automatically be upgraded from the NT CD. 3rd party drivers may not work and the supplier should be contacted. In particular Video drivers and Printer drivers were moved for NT4.0 from Win32 to the NT executive to improve performance and reduce memory use (basically moved from Ring 3 - user mode to Ring 0 - kernel mode). This does have the effect that a graphics driver could crash NT.

Download the appropriate tar file for you system. Untar it. Add the bin directory (the one that contains coot and coot-real) to your path and you are ready to go... You should not need to edit or use the setup/coot* files.
