Contents How do I read the same email account on two computers?

SpeedGate E-Mail FAQ
Usually, all your mail is transferred off of our servers and onto your computer. Anything you download is no longer available if you go check the same account on another computer. Most email programs have a setting that will leave mail on the server so that you can retrieve it from another computer. You do have to be careful setting this up, because if neither computer clears out the old messages, you could end up with with several months' worth of email clogging your mailbox on the server.

Contents Can someone else read my mail? Can someone steal my password?

SpeedGate E-Mail FAQ
The short answer: yes. Because email passes through many systems on its way to its destination, and because it is usually transmitted "in the clear," it is possible for an eavesdropper in the right place to intercept a message. This is especially true with unsecured or public networks, such as wireless hotspots. Your login and password are also transmitted to SpeedGate when checking (and sometimes when sending) mail.

Email isn't available through SLED for two reasons: (1) the two library budgets could not support the telecommunication costs to offer email accounts to the public, and (2) commercial email services are available. In some Alaskan communities, local Internet providers offer Internet access and email accounts for a fee.
