February is a great month for planting fruit trees, blackberries, grapes and any other bareroot fruit stock that is for our area. During this month, finish transplanting established shrubs, trees and native plants that need to be moved during the dormant season.

The best time for planting trees is dependent on what type of tree is being planted. Most conservation tree plantings in Indiana are done with bare-root seedlings that may only be one or two years old. These seedlings should be planted in the Spring. Anchor staking should be done only when necessary and in most instances should be removed within a year after transplanting. Trees with root balls which are light in weight often need to be staked to ensure they are anchored in the soil and will not blow over on a windy day. Field-grown trees rarely need staking due to their deep and heavy root balls, which securely anchor them in the ground.

The shade tree program distributes trees to be planted twelve months of the year. Availability of tree species is best in late spring, summer, and early fall. During the hot summer months extra care should be taken when loosening the root ball and providing deep watering on a regular basis. Yes, you are allowed to sell fruit from your own tree, as long as the fruit is produced by practice of the agricultural arts upon land which you control. The location of sale must also take place on land which you control. You are also allowed to sell vegetables, shell eggs, fruits, and nuts, upon land you control, as long as you have grown or produced the agricultural product.

No - for pruning purposes, we separate fruit trees into 2 groups: The apples, crabapples and pears produce their fruit on older wood. When we prune them, we can remove new growth to control size without affecting fruit yield.
