Although a fenced yard is not a requirement for owning an Airedale, it is a very big plus! Before bringing a dog in to your household, you should consider what you will do on days that you are sick, running late, or for some other reason unable to walk the dog. Many areas have some type of leash law and, for the health of the dog, you should never allow the dog to run freely, without some type of boundary.

We rarely place an Airedale in a home without a fenced yard. If you believe your circumstances are extraordinary, contact your nearest Airedale rescue volunteer with the details. Having a fenced yard does not mean that you should stick your dog in the yard and expect him to take care of himself! Airedales need to be members of the family and need you to actively exercise them. Airedales left too long alone in a fenced yard become bored and get into trouble.

We got into Sheltie Rescue (see Melody's story on our Success Stories page) because we were asked to help pay for the medical care incurred by a Sheltie who was horribly injured when she was hit by a car. Dogs who are outside and unrestrained are far too likely to be injured by cars, by other dogs, or even by cruel people passing by. All homes that adopt from Sheltie Rescue of Utah are required by contract to have a fully fenced yard and for the fence to be in good repair.

You don't need a physical fence these days. You can purchase a electronic fence that is literally underground. Your dog wears a special collar that emits a annoying sound when they come too close to a buried cable. Dogs remember this boundary and learn quickly to avoid passing the "perimeter".

We place our rescue corgis only as house dogs. Although we prefer a fenced yard, we will consider all responsible applicants on a case-by-case basis.

Honestly, size is not nearly as big of an issue as security of fencing. A Pharaoh can easily jump anything less than a four-foot fence. A motivated Pharaoh "on the hunt" can jump a five foot fence in a single bound. They have also been known to dig under un-buried fences and open easy-to-figure-out gates (they're very smart about that).

No. Many of our dogs would be perfect fits for apartment living. It just depends on the dog. When you contact us and apply to adopt, we will let you know which of our dogs would be best for apartment living.

Greyhounds are sprinters, and expend all their energy in little bursts. In fact, with just a few minutes of sprinting a couple of times a week, all a greyhound needs is a long daily walk. Trust us, no house is large enough for a greyhound to really exercise in, so the size of your house or apartment does not matter. This is especially true as sprinters spend the better part of the day preparing to sprint (sleeping).

The numbers on an electric meter are clearly visible from six to 10 feet away. And, by noting the position of the dial indicators, an experienced meter reader can accurately read an electric meter from as far away as twenty feet. We also provide binoculars and/or monoculars for readings beyond the range where the dials are not clearly visible. According to state law, however, we have the right to enter a customer's property for the purpose of reading the meter.

If there are children under 6 years old in the household and you are interested in adopting a dog under 4 years old, you must have a fenced-in yard. Retrievers can be big, bouncy, and mouthy dogs, and can unintentionally hurt small children. A fenced in yard allows a "time-out" space for a dog that really needs to run and play.
