The antique finish we use on our silver and gold highlights the design and makes it easier to read. Gold does not naturally oxidize so it is a bit artificial on gold. The chemical treatment we use to darken the metal is the same for both silver and gold. A solution of tellurium dioxide and hydrochloric acid is applied to the metal and rinsed off. On all displays, black is the natural background color. Until recently (with Macs and Windows machines) black was a default for all graphics backgrounds. It could be that the shutter speed selected is too fast for the available ambient light. Use a slower shutter speed. Backgrounds that are very dim or very bright are interpreted as average in terms of brightness when metered with your camera's light meter or a hand held meter. With an very dim background, close down your aperture or use the exposure compensation dial to decrease the exposure by 1/2 to 1 1 /2 stops depending on how dark the background is.
