Justice Studies is a post-diploma, degree-completion program that provides professionally-relevant education to individuals seeking or pursuing careers within the criminal justice field or related areas. The program is offered on a part-time basis only to meet the needs of employed students.

There are three: Alpha Phi Sigma, the Criminal Justice honor society, Lambda Alpha Epsilon, the Criminal Justice club, and the Paralegal organization. Refer to the Department of Justice Studies home page for more information on these organizations.

The program is interdisciplinary, with required and elective professional courses from a variety of disciplines, including criminology, psychology, and sociology. Students develop an understanding of the major concepts and theoretical perspectives underlying the criminal justice system and acquire advanced knowledge and skills in critical areas like interviewing, crisis management, problem-solving, research methods, crime prevention and more.

Small class sizes in Justice Studies, ranging from 15 to 40 students, enhance the learning process and maximize your contact with faculty. It is not possible to earn the entire Justice Studies degree through distance education. However, a number of courses that are part of the Justice Studies curriculum are offered through distance education. Distance education formats include: online, via the Internet; print materials, via mail; and audiocassette with print materials, via mail.

Admission criteria are competitive because only a limited number of students will be accepted into the program. Students are admitted into specific concentrations within Justice Studies. Key factors in admission are overall grade point average, grade point average in the first three common core or required concentration Justice Studies courses taken, and grades in similar coursework at another institution.

The Justice Studies major is open to full-time and part-time students. Courses are offered both day and evening so that students can complete the program as day or evening students. Core courses are regularly offered on a day and evening schedule. Electives are also regularly offered, but not both day and evening or every semester. Students should check the list of classes issued for each semester.

Program graduates may find employment in: the criminal justice system, social service agencies, law enforcement, the court system, educational settings, law offices, corporations, and federal or state agencies. Possible job titles include: investigator, police officer, human resource officer, paralegal, children's rights advocate, probation or parole officer, research or claims analyst, case worker, and management consultant.

The length of time to complete the degree will depend on the number of courses you take each semester. Normally, students complete the program in four to six years.

Executive Order 12898 (pdf 29k) requires federal agencies and its recipients to develop a strategy that prevents disproportionately high and adverse human health or environmental effects, including social and economic effects on minority populations and low-income populations. This requirement is called environmental justice.

Yes. You must choose a concentration: Child Advocacy, Justice Systems or Paralegal Studies. You cannot be admitted to the program without a concentration.

All 15-16 credits of the core must be taken at MSU. A maximum of 50% of 24 - 25 credits within a concentration may be transferred from another institution if it is judged equivalent to corresponding MSU courses. A minimum of 12 credits at the 300 or 400 levels must be completed within the major at MSU. Students in the Paralegal Studies concentration may take any minor except Paralegal Studies. Students in the Justice Systems concentration may take any minor except Criminal Justice.

You should take SOCI 301 Research Methods instead of JUST 221. You should also have the Justice Studies Director, Dr. David Dodd, sign a credit adjustment form.

Normally, students must successfully complete 30, one-term courses to earn their B.A. in Justice Studies.

Physicians who are licensed in multiple states often find themselves in multiple jeopardy when they run into problems with an infraction that brings them to the attention of the State Board of Medical Examiners in any one of the states in which they are licensed. When a physician has violated the Medical Practice Act in a given state, leading to disciplinary hearings and sanctions in that state, reports are forwarded to any other state in which the physician is also licensed.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, “Environmental Justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.” Often low income communities and communities of color are disproportionately affected by environmental pollution.

If the EEOC, after investigating a charge of employment discrimination filed against a state or local government employer under Title VII, or the Americans with Disabilities Act determines that there is reasonable cause to believe a violation of the law has occurred and conciliation efforts are unsuccessful, the EEOC will then refer the charge to the Department of Justice.

Early in 1990, the Congressional Black Caucus, a bi-partisan coalition of academicians, social scientists and political activists met with EPA officials to discuss their findings that EPA was unfairly applying its enforcement inspections and that environmental risk was higher in racial minority and low-income populations.

It varies. Some studies involve visits that last only a few hours and are called outpatient studies; other studies require overnight stays and are called residential studies. The longest residential studies may last about three weeks. Post-study follow-up visits for blood samples are sometimes necessary.

Under Section 5, covered jurisdictions cannot enforce voting changes unless and until they obtain approval ("preclearance") either from the federal district court in Washington, D.C. or from the Attorney General. If the jurisdiction chooses to obtain preclearance from the Attorney General, s/he has 60 days after receiving all the necessary information to decide whether a governmental entity has shown that a proposed voting change is not discriminatory in purpose or effect.
