Once you have properly connected your camera to your computer (see FAQ #2 listed above), your computer will see your camera (connected and powered on) as a disk drive - most likely listed as "removable disk." Now that you know where to look to find the images, they can be viewed and/or downloaded in a variety of programs. The optimum resolution for large format printing is 150 dpi at the final printed size. If the digital picture is between 72 and 150 dpi at the final printed size and has good quality colour and contrast then it should be fine.

Codecs allow Windows and many applications to view your RAW files. They are provided and maintained by the camera manufacturers. You can find codecs for the files in your Gallery by going to the 'File' menu in the Photo Gallery, and pressing the 'Check for updates' button in the 'Options Dialog'. If there are codecs available for files that you have in your Gallery, a web page will open with a link to download the codec.

Connect your camera and click the Still Picture Display button (digital camera icon at the top left corner of the screen). The still picture taken by your camera appears and by clicking the Import button (right arrow icon at the top right corner) after clicking and selecting the optional still picture, the still picture is imported to the selected album.

You will find that photos are stored in the \My Documents\My Pictures directory If you chose to save the pictures to a storage card, then you will find these pictures in the Storage Card\My Documents\My Pictures directory

Digital cameras are wonderful tools that allow us to capture our images in many different ways. The camera is designed to actually take three pictures; one in red, one in green and the other in blue (similar to the way a projection TV works). It then combines the colours together and saves the image onto the picture card. It is very important to make sure that the camera is set to the highest quality setting possible. You want to create the best quality picture that the camera can make.

This is a question that we hear constantly … especially from film photographers who are being blitzed by advertising and feel that they are somehow being left behind by not "going digital." So, just for the record, we'd like to state that prints and enlargements you take on your ten-year-old film camera are likely to be as good … or better … than prints made from a digital camera you purchased last week.

Yes. You can use the Apple iPhoto program (available in the Open Lab workgroup) to download, edit, and organize your photos. Be aware, however, that there is a limit to how much you may store in your lab folder. Currently, you are not allowed to have more than 500MB in this folder, including your pictures, class documents, and system files. If you need your photos burned to a CD to save space in your folder, speak to Lesley in 267b.

DRAM requires power to store data. Assuming you have a DRAM card that is compatible with your camera, when you remove the card from your camera the pictures will be lost. SRAM cards also require power. SRAM cards, however, have a built-in battery to store information. Therefore, they have a fixed shelf life equal to the life of the onboard battery. After a certain period of time, the SRAM battery has to be replaced just like a watch or a camera battery needs replacement.

My pictures are taken in an extra room that sees very little traffic. The camera is placed on a tripod and the legs of the tripod are placed on tape marks I have on the floor. Yes, you can download digital images into Ranch Manager. Ranch Manager accepts the standard formats .gif and .jpg (jpeg) for importing pictures. Ranch Manager’s Cattle software edition was specifically designed for both cow calf operations and registered herds. Ranch Manager is built like a herd book and allows multiple views of your herd and tracks every aspect of your cattle operation.

Some cameras are designed for this, so you should check your manual. It's rare to find this feature in high quality digital cameras, but lower quality multifunction cameras with CMOS sensors sometimes offer this. See, for example, AipTek. If your camera doesn't already support some webcam features, you may still be able to do it if you have a video capture card (or USB device) of some kind, by connecting the video out from your camera to the video in on your PC.

The good news is, unless you are shooting close-up pictures of jewelry, you don't need an expensive camera to take good product shots. If you are shooting pictures for use on websites and not for print, you can get a good camera for less than $200. The quality of your images is going to depend much less on the sophistication of your camera and much more on your lighting and how well you operate the camera.
