We do indeed have wireless, which you are welcome to experience with your laptop, or a laptop that you check out from the Reserve Desk. Yes. There are wireless capabilities in two places in the library: at the front of the library and in the atrium area. Access requires an IEEE 802.11b compliant network card. Not directly. Solano Wireless Internet provides "wireless Internet access", not "wireless networking" (the term "wireless" is thrown around pretty loosely). Wireless Internet access means that there are no cables (phone line, cable or other physical connections) between our transmitting towers and relay stations and your roof-top receiver. We deliver the "signal" to you via wireless transmission.

No. Wireless cards are not required, but they are necessary if you want to save your exam to the Law School network. If you do not have a wireless card in your laptop or don't have it turned on, the exam will be saved to your hard drive and flash drive but not to the network.

Wireless access, via the AirBears campus service, is available in many campus libraries. UC Berkeley students, faculty, and staff with a CalNet ID are eligible to use this free service. Visiting scholars and campus affiliates can obtain a CalNet ID from their sponsoring department. Many laptop computers and PDA’s have built-in wireless networking. If yours does not, you will have to PURCHASE an 802.11b or 802.11b/g network adapter that is 802.1x compatible. 802.1x compatibility is critical, since that is the security protocol that facilitates access to the system. Any 802.11b/g network device that fully supports the 802.1x protocol should work. You will also need to purchase or download an appropriate 802.

The network or wireless PC Card provided with the Air2Data kit is called a PCMCIA Card or PC Card. Almost all laptops have one or more PC Card slots. Some laptop manufacturers place a plastic cover over these slots. Often you must remove the plastic cover by using the adjacent eject button or latch. We have provided a picture of a few different styles under our Troubleshooting Guide below.
