Frequently Asked Questions

I am looking for a new (used) pop-up, do I need a heater/furnace?

FAQ
Like an air conditioner, a heater/furnace is a personal choice comfort item. Heaters used by pop-up campers can either be a factory installed LP Gas fired furnace or electric "space" heaters. If using anything other than a factory installed heater be aware of dangers which may include fire and/or carbon monoxide gas. Factory LP gas furnaces have an outside vent, so assuming it's operating properly, there's little danger of CO poisoning.

I am looking for a new (used) pop-up, do I need a brakes?

FAQ
The "legal" need for brakes is different for each and every state. Once purchased and registered, your home state rules will apply while you travel. If the state you are registered in does NOT require brakes for your weight trailer, then no state you travel through can require them of you (unless you move to that state and attempt to register it there.
Related Questions

I am looking for a new (used) pop-up, do I need a battery?

FAQ
That depends on a couple of factors, like does your pop-up have electric brakes and where you are going to camp. If your pop-up has electric brakes, yes you need a battery in order for the break away switch to work correctly. Should your pop-up inadvertently disconnect from the tow vehicle while towing, the break away switch will engage the trailer brakes to stop it. That is provided you have a battery on the pop-up to power the brakes. See how that works.

I am looking for a new (used) pop-up, do I need a refrigerator?

FAQ
This is one of those personal preference items. Many pop-up owners are happy to use coolers for all their food items. I find it easier to use the refrigerator for reusable items (mustard, mayo, milk, OJ, eggs, dressings...) and to use a cooler for drinks. It is a very nice option, but it is just that optional. Ask around then consider your lifestyle before making this decision. Remember if you get one, it needs some power source to work.

I am looking for a new (used) pop-up, do I need a porta-potti?

FAQ
First, for those who don't know the term, "Porta-Potti" is the name of a self contained toilet system manufactured by Thetford. This is a personal comfort choice. They are very nice to avoid those late night runs to the bath house to heed the call of nature, or to avoid going out in the dark when dry camping to dig a hole. You can take a look at mine on my potti page.

I am looking for a new (used) pop-up, do I need an air conditioner?

FAQ
This is a personal choice comfort item. Depending on where you live it may be unnecessary to have one, or it may almost be a necessity. Pop-Up campers in the northern states or Canada may not need an air conditioner, but a Texas or Florida camper would probably look strangely at any one with out AC. Even living in the Maryland and camping in the Mid-Atlantic area I am glad I got an air conditioner. An item to keep in mind is that a pop-up has very little (OK, none) insulation.
Related Questions

How do I turn on the heater/furnace?

FAQ
The most common furnace used in pop-up campers is manufactured by Atwood. These use a thermostat similar to that used in homes. There is a slide switch (on-off) on the bottom of the thermostat which can be hard to see. Turn this on. The blower will come on after a few seconds, and 15 - 20 seconds before the heater attempts to ignite the flame. After the blower comes on, you should hear a distinct click as the furnace igniter tries to light. it will only make 10 attempts then shut down.

Not necessarily, however there are many considerations here. Similar to the question above, if you think you are going to need to replace your furnace in the next 24 to 36 months, you should consider having it installed with the air conditioner, i.e., a complete system. With the new higher efficiency system you'll probably qualify for cash rebates, low interest financing, and far better warranties than when you replace one component at a time.

Can I use my chimney with my new furnace?

Frequently Asked Questions
Furnace technology has advanced significantly in recent years, raising concerns over chimney use. As a result of changing technology, many existing masonry chimneys aren't able to meet the specific demands of new furnaces. There are several reasons for this furnace-chimney incompatibility. First, the size of the chimney can be an issue. Modern, higher-efficiency furnaces transfer more heat into your home and less heat up the chimney than older, less-efficient units.

Related Questions

Why does my water heater rumble and pop?

FAQ
Noisy water heaters are a result of sediment that builds up in the bottom of the tank. Small air bubbles are trapped in the sediment and as the water heats up, these bubbles rise to the surface of the sediment and make rumbling, popping and banging sounds. Depending upon your water supply and how much you use your water heater, the sediment can build up quickly. Installing a full port ball valve in the heater will allow adequate access to flush the heater regularly, every 6 months as a minimum.

Why don't I get as much heat out of my new high efficiency furnace?

Kidder Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc.
Actually, you get more heat out of every dollar's worth of gas you buy with a high efficiency furnace compared to a 15-20 year old furnace. What you're probably referring to is the temperature of the air coming out of the register. This feels cooler because of the increased volume of air on your new furnace, therefore it feels cooler because the temperature rise is not as great.
Related Questions

Will my new furnace work differently than my old one?

Frequently Asked Questions
Furnace technology has advanced significantly in recent years. Modern furnaces are designed to provide more even and efficient heating than past furnaces, which can impact both how your system operates and what you notice about your system. To better regulate temperatures and airflow, modern furnaces move more air over the heat exchanger than older furnaces. The air that comes out of your furnace registers may not seem as warm as the air from your old furnace, but overall airflow is improved.

Do I need to get my furnace cleaned every year?

New Page 1
Naturally, you would expect a heating contractor to recommend an annual furnace cleaning as we do. But we do so for a number of reasons. A cleaning means that your furnace will operate more efficiently, getting more heat for your fuel dollar. More importantly, however, the cleaning also includes a thorough safety check of the entire unit for cracked or defective/damaged parts. This annual maintenance check will assure you a carbon monoxide free winter. We recommend 60 degrees.
