ResNet's router only passes TCP/IP packets. This means that Novell servers (like the ones in the ITS computer labs), Appleshare servers, and most peer-to-peer environments, like Lantastic, NetBEUI, and Appletalk will not pass from NYU-NET to ResNet, or vice-versa. In other words, if you set up your computer for file sharing on ResNet, you'll see it all over ResNet, but not in the labs or anywhere else on NYU-NET. Even if you don't subscribe to ResNet, you can still use Bear Access and e-mail from a lab or with a modem or from another computer that has access to the Internet.

ResNet is Cornell University's broadband Ethernet service. The wireless network offers limited access to services authenticated through the student proxy. It is similar to the SPIN network (Student Plug-in) and you must enter your central student or staff username and password to gain access to some network facilities. Answer: At this time, the Computing Services staff is working on a VPN (Virtual Private Network) solution for off-campus connections, but it is currently not available. All student dorm rooms have network jacks with free Internet and network access. In addition there are two computer labs containing 60 Compaq PCs, one located in Colgate Hall and one located in the Susan Colgate-Cleveland Library/Learning Center. Both computer labs are equipped with an HP8150N high-speed laser printer, a scanner, and are staffed by student monitors. Also, there are 17 computers located in the library for Internet access and research.

You can access your network files from any network-connected PC on campus. Simply log in to the computer with your own User ID and password. You should then have access to the T: drive when you open 'My Computer'. When the ResNet team members configure a computer, they make sure that file sharing is turned OFF. The configuration instructions also include this procedure. This is for your protection, to make certain you do not unknowingly allow others to see or alter your files when you connect your computer to ResNet.
