What's the difference between WAV files and MP3 files? Well, the WAV files are uncompromised and uncompressed, original master recordings. They are in true broadcast quality. MP3 files have been compressed to make the files smaller, thus faster to download. MP3 compression uses a clever technology which discards some information from the audio file - audio which is deemed to be inaudible to the human ear.

These are the music formats that DSS DJ is accepting. WAV is uncompressed audio data for PC. It's about 10 megabytes per stereo minute. MP3 is a format that compresses raw wav files at about 10 to 1 (so a 10 megabyte wav file would be a 1 megabyte MP3 file). There is some loss of fidelity in the compression.

Some programs do allow you to convert single tones (monophonic instruments and such) to a midi data, but as far as converting complex recordings and arrangements, currently, it hasn't been done. Although most current CD-ROM drives can convert digitally, only CD-ROM drives that support the Redbook audio format and have a reasonable level of seeking accuracy can convert tracks from CDs to disk in digital format. Yes, there is some additional loss of quality when you re-encode to MP3... so you should certainly try to avoid doing this sort of thing repeatedly. But if you re-encode at a reasonable bitrate (160 kbps or higher) with a decent encoder, then the loss of quality should not be very noticeable.

While the Internet is a good source for MP3's, for many people, the primary source for their MP3 collection is from their existing music collections (audio files, CD's, and analog recordings). This is particularly true for audiophiles, who may have extensive collections of analog recordings which are no longer in print. Not directly, but it can be done. There is a freeware (GPL) plugin for WinAmp, gen_np which saves the track and artist information to a text file. Gen_np can also generate the "now playing:" information from the currently playing CD, if you use WinAmp as your CD Player application - that way, you can use it instead of KookieJar's built-in CD Player support.

The MP3 compression consumes a lot of computation time, actually, the lame encoder that's used by CDex is relatively fast compared to other MP3 encoders (with comparable sound quality, listen the output of the Xing 'fast' encoder, and you know what I mean). The ripping process can be slow when you have With certain CD-ROM drives you might get better performance when you set the CD-SPEED to 32, but this might increase the change of jitter errors.
